From The Back Cover:

"Bette Nolan moves to a small town after the death of her husband to try to begin anew. Pursuing a dream of a different kind of life, she is determined to find pleasure in her simple daily routines. Among those who help her in both expected and unexpected ways are the ten-year-old boy next door, three wild woman friends from her collage days, a twenty-year-old who is struggling to find his place in the world, and a handsome man who is ready for love.

In this rich and deeply satisfying novel, a resilient woman embarks upon an unforgetable journey of adventure, self-discovery, and renewal and comes to appreciate the solace found in ordinary pleasures."

****Elizabeth Berg has become one of my favorite authors -- and this book does not disappoint. I enjoyed reading about Bette's journey following the death of one that she loved so very much. Elizabeth Berg writes with a description that surpasses a lot of her peers. The story-line was great, the characters were great and the writing was great.

Berg does not disappoint with this one- it was hard to put down once I started reading. You could tell how much Bette and her husband loved each other and how hard it was for her to be without him. I especially liked how Bette wanted to reunite with her old friends- I have often thought to attempt to contact a few of my old friends to catch up with them. Sending off to Wordyone- enjoy! Thanks snowy652 for organizing this ray :)

Another good Elizabeth Berg book with all the qualities I love about her writing - poignant, evocative with characters who think the things that you would in their situation .... only one thing about the story line bothered me a little bit - Betta was very lucky (and it seemed to me a little unlikely) that she was able to locate her old college roomies and actually resume a friendship after 20+ years ... Don't you wish the world was more like the lovely little town that Betta found? Thanks so much for sharing this book, snowy! :=D

Mailed to chambejd Sept 19th.

I received this book from a fellow BC'er as part of a long bookray and will read it, journal it and pass it along. Thank you.
Berg has always seemed to have the ability to crawl into my skin and write my feelings and she didn't disappoint me with this novel about hope and love and friendship and finding the value of a quality in the simple, lovely things around us in our lives. If the saying 'Take time to smell the roses' could be written into a novel, this would be it in many ways.

I forgot to post that I mailed this on December 2nd! Its on its way to AuburnCaMom.

As always I love reading Elizabeth Berg. Once I started reading I could not put it down. I loved the character Betta and loved hearing about her love for her hubby, her move and how she discovered her home and how it truly became her home! How wonderful to reconnect with friends, wish I could do that with some I've lost contact with. You will surely enjoy reading this book.

Journal Entry 21 by AuburnCaMom from Auburn, California USA on Wednesday, December 27, 2006
The book arrived before the holiday. I have started it and it is wonderful so far!

Journal Entry 22 by AuburnCaMom from Auburn, California USA on Tuesday, January 2, 2007
Wow, I finished this last night and yet again I love Elizabeth Berg. The book ended well, but it was very unexpected as I had so many pages left and had just sat down to read and I really only had a few pages as the rest were fillers for book groups! I was sad to end it, but loved the story. PMing DoveiLibri though it says prefers to be last, we will see. If she is to be skipped I will PM next after her.

The Year of Pleasures will be on its way to Satnam as soon as I've finished reading it! January 31, 2007: Finished this wonderful book tonight, just under the wire for my January TBR-Only challenge! Just wanted to update everyone. I am reading this and loving it! I don't want it to end, but I have PMed Ladybug01 for her address.

Journal Entry 27 by Satnam from Milford, New Hampshire USA on Thursday, April 12, 2007
I loved this book! I read another book by her last year and didn't like it, but I'm glad I tried this one. After ending a long-term relationship last year, I could relate to some of the grieving process. I ended up writing down 2 pages of quotes from the book. I may edit this entry later with one of my favorites.

I mailed it on to mysteryfan03 today. Thank you snowy652 for sharing a great book!

Arrived safely yesterday, thanks, naturallybear. My ring pile has grown over the last few days so it may be a few weeks before I get to this one but I'll try not to hold up the rest of the readers too long :-)

Journal Entry 33 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Sunday, September 2, 2007
This is quite easily inmy Top 5 reads of this year. I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of Elizabeth Berg before but I'm so glad that I signed up to this ring as I'll now be on the look-out for her other books.

I loved how she showed such respect for her characters, especially Betta and her relationship with her late husband. I also thoroughly enoyed her writing style - very flowing and at the same time clea an evocative. A definite un-pt-downable read :-)

Thank you so much for sharing, snowy652. I've actually had raeliz64's adress for a couple of weeks, so many apologies for not sending on sooner.

I'm going to have to get myself a copy of this - definitely one of my favourite EB books (along with the Katie books and Never Change). I wish my mum could read this. Heck, I wish I could buy a copy for everyone I know!
I've been grappling with depression recently and this is the sort of book that I needed right now, to remind me of all the everyday pleasures to be had.
Thanks snowy652 for sending this very special book out into the world to share with us.
It'll be posted to bug2004 tomorrow.

Update 12/09/07
I've literally devoured this book. This is my first book by Elizabeth Berg and I will definitely become one of her fans. The first few chapters were particularly good. The author's description of Betta's relationship with her husband and the many facets of grief she endures brought tears to my eyes. I am looking forward to discover more books by this author.

I am contacting the next BXer today, so that I can send this book on its way. Thanks for sharing and happy holidays to all!
