Synopsis
Set in the 1950s, in an England still recovering from the Second World War, THE LOST ART OF KEEPING SECRETS is the enchanting story of Penelope Wallace and her eccentric family at the start of the rock'n'roll era. Penelope longs to be grown-up and to fall in love; but various rather inconvenient things keep getting in her way. Like her mother, a stunning but petulant beauty widowed at a tragically early age, her younger brother Inigo, currently incapable of concentrating on anything that isn't Elvis Presley, a vast but crumblng ancestral home, a severe shortage of cash, and her best friend Charlotte's sardonic cousin Harry... Eva Rice's novel is an utterly engrossing read, in the tradition of Nancy Mitford and I CAPTURE THE CASTLE.

From the Author
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to review my book (with the exception of the charming Sheila!) It took a long time to write and a great deal of research, but I hope you think it was worth it. When I started TLAOKS, I hoped to get people interested in the destruction of the country house and also in checking out some of the lesser known fifties stars (like dreamy Johnnie Ray.) But essentially, it is a love story without mobiles and email... I am always so thrilled that anyone at all reads what I write, so the success of this work is way beyond anything I had hoped for. I like to think that it takes people out of the noughties and back to a time when tea was vital, trains ran on time and everything was possible as long as you had a good pair of shoes, a packet of American cigarettes and omlettes to eat at dawn. Enjoy...
