This book has something for everyone; murder, mystery, magic, history, romance, and fantasy.

The language is similar to that of textual adventure games, except you cannot participate, only observe. Reading just flows, like a dream. Sometimes, you may even shake yourself to make sure that you are awake.

I cannot do the story justice, so have copied below the front matter.

"On a snowy night in February, at the improbable point in lower Manhattan where Waverly Place intersects Waverly Place, Leo meets Veronica for the first time. Starkly beautiful, mysterious, aloof, she leads him into a world where illusion blends seamlessly with reality -- a luminously transformed city where powerful underground streams criss-cross beneath the streets, a city of dragon points and Tibetan mysticism, where real time is magically altered. Ten years have passed since Veronica's father, the famous magician Albin White, disappeared while performing a dangerous feat of time travel before a packed theatre audience. White's disappearance was no accident; he was sabotaged by his apprentice Starwood, who interfered at a critical moment and sent him hurtling into the past, free to explore other eras but with no means of returning to the present.

Until Veronica finds Leo. Born in a year of unusual lunar cycles, Leo is the only person who can travel through time to contact White and receive his coded messages, messages that mobilize a remarkable cast of characters to help in his return: Veronica's brother Clement, a pickpocket who prints photographs from telepathic images; Keko, a blind Japanese courtesan with a passion for lunar cartography; and Otto, another master magician who powers emanate from the number 8. Through them, Leo is sent to the Elizabethan England of Sir Walter Raleigh and his School of Night, to the fantastical vistas of ancient Tibet, and finally back to the landscape of his own dreams and memories that have haunted him all his life."

Harper Collins include a brief biography of Nicholas Christopher, and Random House provides an excerpt. The publisher of this copy is Bantam Press.

This was a delight to read, even for the third time. It will be hard to let this book go, except in the hope that it will be found by someone that will enjoy it as much as I have.

This book was somewhat hard to get into, and i made the error of putting it aside for a time, which made starting it again hard slog, however on completion, it was light reading, very imaginative although a somewhat "weird" storyline, i agree with the person who set it free, sometimes i wasnt sure i was awake when reading it. Nevertheless, i recommend reading it and have passed it on to a friend who lives in the central wheatbelt of wa, so veronica will once again be travelling. The concept of setting books free is great, i will be on the lookout for more and intend to set a few of mine on a journey. This particular book was picked up by my 12 year old son, on the 17/05/07 whilst attending the science expo with his school, he passed it onto me as a birthday surprise :)
