From the back cover: "Vienna, 1910. The hunt for a killer begins in the darkness of a hot August night, when an eighteen year old girl named Dora (loosely inspired by Freud's famous patient) is found brutally murdered near the Imperial Palace..."

One of the best books I read this year. Surprisingly, the story is set in the beginning of the 20th century and in...Vienna. This is a mistery fiction book with plenty of interesting information about how an investigation was conducted back then. I do intend to buy a copy. Excellent!

Released 17 yrs ago (6/17/2006 UTC) at Sent by post (Hasliberg) in -- controlled release --, Bern / Berne Switzerland

I really liked it! Fantastic opportunity to get to know a new excelent author and discover a lot of life in the early 20th century in Vienna. I always like historical settings when they´re well done and we get to learn a lot while we enjoy ourselves.

Journal Entry 8 by dubly from Luzern, Luzern Switzerland on Monday, October 9, 2006
This book is from a bookring and I got it from penelopewanders by post. I certainly take it on my next holiday and I`m very keen to know more about as it is set in Vienna and I was there just two weeks ago.

Journal Entry 9 by dubly from Luzern, Luzern Switzerland on Sunday, October 22, 2006
I really enjoyed this book. It`s amazing how little Vienna has changed after a whole century. All the cafes and places are still there. This book is now going overseas as part of a bookring.

RELEASE NOTES:

This book is on its way to Cynthia in the USA to continue the bookring.

Journal Entry 11 by nojokeva from Virginia Beach, Virginia USA on Friday, November 10, 2006
I received book in mail from Dubly. Thank you. We are one happy book family in Bookcrossing. I will get to reading soon.

Journal Entry 12 by nojokeva from Virginia Beach, Virginia USA on Sunday, January 28, 2007
I really enjoyed this book. Very interesting and provocative. You wouldn't think such things happened like that in Victorian times. The art of police investigation and pathology is fascinating and very well described.

I am sending it on to Bug2004 as soon as I get the address.

Received today! Thanks! Mmmm, looks promising...

Journal Entry 17 by voveryte from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Certainly one of the best reads this year! What I really liked was not only descriptions of Vienna in 1910 and methods of police investigations at that time. I liked that author lets other people be involved in this investigation (not officially) - inspector's wife and her lady friend, though in emotional and more womenly way.

Mailed to annadlx today. Enjoy!
Thanks penelopewanders for the opportunity and Bug2004 for passing it on to me.

Journal Entry 18 by Annadlx from Wiesbaden, Hessen Germany on Sunday, May 27, 2007
this arrived yesterday. It'll have to wait a bit until I can find the time to read it. There are just too many rings coming my way right now. Bu I promise to take just as long as needed...

Journal Entry 19 by Annadlx from Wiesbaden, Hessen Germany on Sunday, June 17, 2007
I feel really bad about the comment you're all going to read, cause I really didn't get into this story.
It was somewhat weired for me to read about all those places I've been to and to read those German/Austrian names of places, people, magazines didn't help lessen the weiredness I felt. In addition to that I didn't like Shields way of describing things.

I have to say I didn't finish it, cause it really bored me and I had to fight to keep my mind on the book. I guess I didn't succeed and decided against finishing it.

The book will travel to Belgium on the morrow. Hopefully to find a more appreciative reader.
Thanks for the chance to read this.

Journal Entry 20 by iliotropio from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Monday, July 2, 2007

Intellectually challenging and atmospheric. I definitely recommend it.
On its way to Fran-kinstein. Happy reading!

Journal Entry 22 by wingFran-kinsteinwing from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada on Thursday, August 9, 2007
Recieved in the mail today. I''d like to know more about Freud''s Dora before I read it so I can see it from that angle too. You guys all mention how the investigation stuff is so cool, but what about all the sex and psychology that a lot of the reviews and reading guide material touch on? And the title "The Fig Eater", which is so suggestive it''s almost gross! Even the picture on the front -- the title is placed in a downward angle, leading you to stop at a very ''interesting'' spot on the woman''s dress. The book has my attention, that''s for sure.

Penelopewanders - I''m not a very fast reader so it will take me a while but be assured it will return to you eventually. Thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 23 by wingFran-kinsteinwing from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada on Monday, August 20, 2007
Oops! Ok, so I read a bit too much into the title and the cover. I'm as bad as freud! The book isn't about sex at all. It's just a murder mystery and some complicated family associations. And a fun one. I'm at the part where the inspector finds out about Herr K's affair, and Erzebet searches for fig trees at the nature museum. We'll see how things change from here.

-later-

OK- Great Book! It was one of those books I not only wanted to get to the end but actually enjoyed reading each page, because I loved the descriptions of Erzabet's feasts, and all her charms and potions and magical gypsy stories. I thought the ending was going to be a bit more complicated, But I was still surprised.

I agree that it would be a good one to read a second time, because the meaning of some things might pop out -- having been overlooked the first time.

On to the next bookcrosser soon. Thanks for sharing.

Sent to Portugal on September 10, 2007.

Very sorry to say that I just couldn't get into this book at all, I tried a couple of times, but I have found it difficult to read anything just lately, not sure why. Maybe it will find me again one day and I will be able to give it another go. I hope the next person has more luck than me. It is now on it's way to WelshHelen.

Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 33 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, August 7, 2008
This arrived one day last week - thanks for sending to me, 24-7-365Reader and a special thank you to penelopewanders for organising another ring :-)

Journal Entry 34 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, September 20, 2008
I'm afraid that I'm in a bit of a reading slump at the moment as well and didn't enjoy this as much as most of you. Certain things irritated me, including Erszebet and the constant references to criminology text... I really do think that it was my mindset at the time. I also thought that the ending was very rushed and rather than shock me, it just left me cold. Ah well, you can't win them all :-)

Thanks for organising the ring, penelopewanders and many apologies for having it so long. I've had fritzykatz's address for a few weeks and will post on to her at the beginning of the week.

Journal Entry 35 by fritzykatz from Buchenbach, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Tuesday, September 30, 2008
this book has arrived in Hinterzarten; thanks Welsh Helen!

Journal Entry 36 by fritzykatz from Buchenbach, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Monday, October 27, 2008
The women in this book show up much better than the men; that's always interesting! The more I read about the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the happier I am where we are. This, too, is a good therapy!

Journal Entry 37 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Thursday, January 29, 2009
Arrived safely home again! Thanks everyone, for making this a successful ring!
