A Complicated Kindness
4 journalers for this copy...
This is part of a huge lot of hundreds of books that I bought on Ebay. Some titles I wanted for myself, some I knew would make a great RABCK for other Bookcrossers, and some I bought specifically for resale.

Wow! Thank you for this wonderful surprise that arrived in my mailbox today.
This was a fast, enjoyable read. The main character was definitely outside my experience; shocking but still believable. The plot was handled very well - it seemed to move to end without me realising it.
Looking forward to sending this off on another RABCK. :-)

Thanks so much for sending this along! I am hoping to bring it back with me to peru, to pass along to the one other gringo in my little town--- I will be sure to make sure this book (which i have heard GREAT things about) will make the rounds! December 30: Started reading this a few days ago and i am REALLY enjoying it--- very casual, conversational writing which has been really relaxing to read. Fascinating vignettes and events--- reminds me a bit of growing up in rural new brunswick in some ways... :) Will journal more once i have finished--- just wanted to register my thoughts thus far.

What an amazing book. I can understand why it got all the rave reviews it did, and why it won so many awards.
The narrative starts out in what i might unfairly call typical canadiana, in that you get the whole rural, prarie feel from the very beginning, all within the context of the rather repressive mennonite culture. And at first, perhaps like the tourists who visit East Village, it all seems kind of cute and quaint, a little backwards but tolerable and interesting. But as the story progresses, there is a deep complexity that emerges, as well as a whole lotta pain, confusion, disillusionment and self-awareness.
Twists and turns abound as the details of what appeared to be a simple story unfolds, and I was surprised right till the end. I LOVED the character of Nomi--- she might have been to esoteric and internalized to get at times, but the writer did a great job of setting the stage and laying the groundwork for her character so that when she started going into herself a bit and breaking down, you could go there with her without too much trouble. She so wanted to be loved, to love, to believe but know the truth, to be wanted as much as she wanted, to be free and yet not knowing how to do that--- so much conflict in such a young character. I loved the character of her Dad as well---- seemingly simple, but with so much happening below the surface.
Don't want to give too much away for the next reader--- suffice it to say i really really enjoyed reading this book, and it was especially special because it was an unexpected RABCK!! So I am going to repay the kindness and send it on as a RABCK to a bookcrosser who has this book on their wishlist. I chose to keep it in Canadda, as the book is written by a Canadian author, and it might be nice for a few more of us to read it. Thanks again, kryan, for sending this great book on to me!!! I hope it continues to make its rounds for others to enjoy!

This arrived as a RABCK just over a week ago--thanks for sending it along! Things are a bit hectic right now but I will try to journal soon and send it on as a RABCK also....hopefully some time next month!
