Half-blind and alone, Leo tells us of marriage and friendship, and makes the sheer fragility of what seemed forever not only his subject, but perhaps the only subject worth considering.

Journal Entry 6 by RDWirral from New Ferry, Merseyside United Kingdom on Saturday, December 30, 2006
I read this over the last 2 days and thought it was really great, really enjoyed it. After reading loads of great books last year I had been mostly disappointed with what I read this year, and so this book will probably end up as my favourite of 2006. The book starts out as one story and becomes quite another, and is very absorbing as a result, I loved the two central couples, and (slight spoiler) I thought the examination of how it slowly dawns on someone that their loved one is in some way disturbed was thought provoking and excellent. I am on the waiting list for a move it on bookbox being run by redhouse, in which you put in books that were originally registered by someone else as a way of getting them further readers and this is what I'll be doing with What I Loved unless someone else requests it.

Thanks for the trade RD! It arrived at my house this morning. I have several "in front", but I'm looking forward to reading it. Watch this space!

Journal Entry 10 by Annodyne from Sale, Cheshire United Kingdom on Friday, February 16, 2007

I was completely drawn into this book right from the very start. It's difficult to write about without spoiling the story, but there is just so much in it, and the quality of the writing, in conveying moods of tenderness, eroticism, the pain of loss, foreboding, suspense and eventually, a sense of acceptance, is superb. It is going to stay in my mind for a long time.

I loved this book! It is too good to sit around on my bookshelf gathering dust until the next time I move house, and I'm really pleased to be passing it on shortly to some more interested readers in the bookray that I am organising for it.

Journal Entry 11 by Annodyne from Sale, Cheshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 20, 2007
I've drawn up the list for the bookray, and it looks like this -

Niksu - Finland
dotdot - Finland
QueenSissi - Portugal
sudokugirl - Bosnia Herzegovina
Rrrcaron - USA
Roxy4 - Ireland....BOOK IS HERE

The usual "rules", which seem a lot to remember if you are not yet familiar with the way these things work, apply. Briefly- please journal the book when it arrives with you so that we can keep track of where it is. I think about a month is a reasonable amount of time to keep it (but if there are any problems with that please let either myself or the next person after you in the ray know.) During that time, please send a PM to the next person on the list asking for their address so that you can post it on to them, and write another journal entry to let us know what you thought of the book. Don't forget to journal again with details of which bookcrosser you sent the book to, and on what date!

That's about it really. Thank you for joining in sharing this great book. I loved it, as did DianeO and RDWirral who read it before me, and I hope you will too. I really look forward to reading what you thought about it!

I've PM'd Sirah for her address, and will post to her when she replies. Happy reading everyone!

Thank you all for sharing this wonderful book with me! A book so sensual, full of hidden thoughts. Absolutely one of the best reads this year so far.

Next week I´ll meet with Halonhakkaaja who is visiting Helsinki and give the book to her.

Journal Entry 16 by halonhakkaaja from Kuopio, Pohjois-Savo / Norra Savolax Finland on Monday, April 23, 2007
Great book! When I started reading, I didn't like the beginning very much. But when I read further, I liked the book more and more. And then I thought the beginning was just like it had to be.

Sometimes it irritates me, when author leaves some things open, without an ending or explanation. But this time I liked it a lot, that it was so.

The book is going next to Niksu.

Journal Entry 17 by Valpuri from Huittinen, Satakunta Finland on Saturday, May 5, 2007
I got this book from halonhakkaaja some time ago with mission to move it forward to the next reader Niksu. Today the book continues it's journey as planned, but since you had written many nice comments about it here, I used this opportunity and quickly read it as well. Thank you all a lot for sharing this book, it really was a book worth reading.

Amongst all great things in this book, I want to pick up one thing I especially liked: the way which all different studies and works of art, that the characters created during years, have been described in this book. There are not many writers who could write pages about what is on display in art exhibition, giving such detailed image of every piece of art that in the end you feel like you have visited the gallery yourself. And you don't get bored at all, even if you wouldn't be very interested to visit art galleries in real life. - Thanks again and safe travels to this great book!

Journal Entry 18 by Sirah from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Monday, May 7, 2007
I got the book from Valpuri last Saturday at our meet-up in Kuopio and shall hand it over tomorrow to Niksu.

Journal Entry 19 by Niksu from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Sunday, May 13, 2007
Got this book from Sirah today! Thanks to all couriers! I'm going on a vacation tomorrow and I'll take this with me.

Journal Entry 20 by Niksu from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Monday, May 21, 2007
I finished this book during my trip to Barcelona. It was surprisingly slow read and it kept me wondering why. I'm much slower reader when reading in english but maybe it was the content and writing style that affected.

Nevertheless I truly liked the story. First part of the book I didn't know what it was all about. Firts I was a bit annoyed but when thinking more about the story I liked the way author handled it. She didn't let the reader get everything so easy. I wish everyone could have such friends the two families were with each other.

Thanks Annodyne for sharing this wonderful book.

I'm sorry I've kept this book this long. I started to read the book as soon as I got it. I liked it, but somehow it was too serious for me at the moment. I'm sure I'll read What I Loved later. I'm sending this copy to QueenSissi as soon as I get her address.

Edit 28/6/2007: Satrts its journey to Portugal today.

Journal Entry 23 by QueenSissi from Queluz, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Wednesday, July 4, 2007
Arrived yesterday. Thanks

Journal Entry 24 by QueenSissi from Queluz, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Sunday, August 5, 2007
This book had a big impact on me as if it had set boundaries between black. white and gray ... on one side we had matthew, on the other mark and then there was evil in the form of the artist (don''t remember the name and have already sent book).

Plus I absolutely loved Violet on all her shades... and the descriptions about art and violet''s works.

Thanks! sent it to sudokugirl

Journal Entry 25 by sudokugirl from Sarajevo, Sarajevo Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, August 13, 2007

I received this book in the mail at the beginning of the week, but haven't had the chance to journal it until today, computer woes, we've all had them i'm sure, lol. I have a few to read beforehand, but it shouldn't take too long.

Journal Entry 29 by Rrrcaron from Lancaster, New Hampshire USA on Tuesday, January 22, 2008
This was a wonderful read. It covered just about everything. What started as anart history, which I had a little trouble with, then turned into a story of love, death, and then betrayal. I got hooked. My apologies for holding the book so long. It will be moving again!

Received yesterday. Have started reading it already and looks good so far! thanks Rrrcaron.

Journal Entry 31 by Roxy4 from Dublin, Co. Dublin Ireland on Wednesday, March 12, 2008
What a great book! I liked the style of writing and I found it easy to visualise the various paintings that were described. I enjoyed all the characters although I never really understood where Lucille was coming from (ie the way she related to her son).
Right up to the middle of the book I felt that anything could have happened and then I was shocked when something really unexpected happened! (i hadn't read the blurb on the back). Towards the end of the book I wasn't really sure that I liked where the book was heading but it is testament to the good writing that I couldn't put the book down in the last fifty pages.
Will certainly look out for more books by Siri Hustvedt. thanks for releasing, Annodyne.

I'm going to bring the book to the March BCie meet up in Dublin tonight, so it can continue on its journey!
