Trying to set up a ring for this...

RING ETIQUETTE
I'm not too big on rules, so here are some easy guides, instead:
1)If it's coming up on a month that you've had the book, and you ARE reading it CURRENTLY (not just planning to) please journal to let us know it's still in your hands and making progress.
2)If something comes up and you don't think you can read it in a timely manner, please let me know so I can move you down on the ring - or, if you have it in your hands, pass it on and I will reschedule you. I just don't want it stalled.
3)Please take good care of the book since we all want to read it. Especially me! I'm letting it go, but want it to come home so I can enjoy it too!
4)Have fun!

On the (short!) ring:

kryan - Canada
travelernnn - USA APO/UK (USA/UK pref)
queensknob - USA (USA pref)

This was a great book. I didn't find the story to be all too new or exciting, but I like books about family-relationships and how they evolve and about how we think we know someone! I also really enjoyed what I learned about China and Chinese culture from this book. Its always nice to learn about a culture from a character's point of view.

Thank you for sharing, rooshill! I'll be sending this along to Kryan this week.

May 29 - Arrived in the mail today!

May 30 - Just finished reading and PMed for the next address.

As I started reading this novel, I found it very familiar, yet know I have not read it before. I believe this is because I have read an Amy Tan novel before and there are certain themes that repeat - in a good way.

The characters were realistic for me. I could see aspects of people I know in the different characters. Also believable is the way family stories and secrets alter over time and as told by different people.

June 9 - Received address earlier this week and just mailed off book today.

Having recently read Amy Tan's memoir it was noticeable that this book is autobiographical fiction in relation to the relationship between the main character and her mother, including the ailment the mother suffers from. I enjoyed the book and as Tan often does in her books the lessons learned through an improved relationship and understanding between mother and daughter are poignant. The description of the mother's life in China is fascinating.

The book is on its way tomorrow to the next reader. Thanks for coordinating the bookring.
