Thanks again for the trade!
I think this was the first trade I made with MyssCyn - I got this just after I returned from Houston when Catie was undergoing treatment at MD Anderson and MyssCyn was still in the Houston area. It is over 8 years later and I still consider her one of the dearest, sweetest bookcrossers out there. You rock, MyssCyn. On to the book…and I don't know why I took so long.
Enjoyable read overall. This book combines elements of a romance and a mystery and is loads of fun. There are some drawbacks and most of those revolve around some of the more incomprehensible plot devices that are used within the story.
The basic story concerns Maddie, all-around good mother and wife, who finds out that her husband, Brent, is involved in adultery and shady business dealings and is now looking to escape to South America. She is concerned with appearances in the small town of Frog Point and how this will affect her mom and her daughter. Meanwhile, the guy she had a one night stand with in high school, CL Sturgis - and I love the story about how he got his name, shows up on her doorstep. He's all grown up and handsome as sin and he's an accountant trying to figure out the shady business dealings of her husband. The story has plenty of fun characters - loved the relationship between CL and his aunt and uncle. In fact, CL was the best character, hands down. Maddie's daughter, Em, was also well drawn. But I found Maddie annoying. Many of her actions did not make sense, even within the confines of a small town mentality. ****spoiler alert*** Why on earth did she not report the gun and money when she discovered it in the back of the car? Why take CL to the Point to make out when she knows Bailey will be there as a security guard? What possessed her to put the gun in a casserole and give it to a friend to freeze? What happens if the friend defrosts in the microwave? Why does the town "good girl" commit adultery so easily, when even CL is trying to discourage her? Some of these pieces of the plot were almost unbearably mystifying.
So why did I rate it so high? Because I liked CL and was rooting for him, the steamy bits were very steamy (whoa!), the quirky characters were fun, and it was a fast enjoyable read. Mindless entertainment on a warm summer evening.
Quote to remember:
It had taken him twenty years to figure out that the obligations you had to people who took care of you were nothing compared to the obligations you had to the people you wanted to take care of. You could pay back the people who took care of you, but the ones you had to keep safe, well, they were with you forever.
