I picked this up at my local used book shop. I've read several other books by Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale was a favourite) and look forward to this one.

This story follows a woman who leads a life of contrasts and hidden selves. Her relationship with her parents is depressing, and her relationships with men are worse. For all that, I enjoyed the book. Her quirky, independant aunt is charming, her childhood escapades are entrancing, and her dips into the spirit world are intriguing. And I found her faked suicide and subsequent escapades to be very funny.

I made a point of finishing this so I can send it on in a "Mount TBR Relay". I hope you enjoy it, too!

I thought this was a very good story, but not one of Margaret Atwood's best. I really didn't think Joan was a very strong character. She was molded by the men in her life. Her many lives just didn't appeal to me.

I will be sending this book along to finish a stalled bookray.

Got this book in the mail today, which is ideal because I am ready for another book and don't have any other bookring books right now.

Journal Entry 11 by phylwil from Longview, Texas USA on Friday, May 16, 2008
I enjoyed this book but found her struggles as a child and young woman to be depressing; then the story lost momentum in the end. I do enjoy the way Margaret Atwood writes.

Off to the next reader on Monday, when I can get to the post office.

Journal Entry 12 by Timber77 from Russell, Manitoba Canada on Tuesday, June 3, 2008
Received today with great timing since just about to finish off one of my other books - it will be next one I pick up. Thanks phylwil for sending and blackadder75 for bring the stalled bookring to life again, looking forward to the reading it!

----------------------------------------

Finished reading it beginning of July. It was really hard to get into at first - found it boring and sent me off to sleep nicely!), but kept going and really glad I did as started to enjoy the character and her duplicate lives. Love the style of Margaret Atwood, and this book yet again confirmed her as one of my favourite authors.

Thanks so much Timber77 for posting your first book to Australia. The Canadian bookmark is lovely. Thanks so much to blackadder75 for organising it. I am set to finish my current book soon, so we get to it as soon as possible.

I finished reading Lady Oracle this morning....and I really didn't enjoy it. I found myself skipping paragraphs towards the end of the book. I glad I have read other Margaret Atwood books or I may not have been keen to read her other great novels. I'll message Elsita and send it off as soon as possible. Thanks for the experience.

Just got in the mail today...will read shortly!!!

Journal Entry 18 by lisabb2 from Grimes, Iowa USA on Tuesday, September 23, 2008
This was an OK read. At times I liked Joan and her crazy double lives and other times I was disgusted with her willingness to please others. It was hard to get into at first and then got alittle better later on. Overall not a bad read...funny at times.

This book is heading off to JenKazoo shortly!!!

Journal Entry 19 by JenKazoo from Shreveport, Louisiana USA on Sunday, September 28, 2008
I just got this book in the mail! I can't wait to start reading it since I love Atwood so much. I just started a book yesterday so it will be a few days but not too long since my current read is a super page turner! I guess since I am last in the ray I don't have to rush too much. Blackladder75 may want to post on the forum and see if there are any other people who want to read it. If not I'll send it to someone who has it on their wishlist! It would make a nice holiday RABCK!

Update: 10/27/08
I am over halfway through but having a hard time getting into it. I am going to try and finish this week and send it on.

Update: 11/05/08
I tried to finish but for some reason I just cannot get hooked. I was going to try and force myself to read it but there arwe just too many other books around tempting me. I will go ahead and send it on its way! I'm sad about this because I love Atwood so much and always refer to her as my favorite author.

I started reading this almost immediately upon opening! Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 22 by gwendy from Rochester, New York USA on Monday, March 23, 2009
HA! I'm finished! I've been carrying this book around with me for about 5 months now and I've finally finished! Granted, it took a week long illness for me to do so, but that's besides the point. The problem was that Part Two of the book seemed to drag on and on for me. I realize this was at least in part my fault for only reading 5-10 pages every few weeks. I even thought about putting it down a few times, but because it was Atwood I was determined to finish it. The second half of the book was much more entertaining than the first. I found the characters very real and their relationships with each other quite interesting. I could have lived with fewer costume gothic excerpts.

Well, thanks for sharing this book! I'm PMing the next recipient.

Journal Entry 23 by Soft-Landing from Fresno, California USA on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
I received this book April 13 from gwendy. Since I am the last person on the list, I wonder who to send it to next- perhaps the Hobbit? The reviews so far make me curious as to how I will react to the book once I begin to read it.
