While I think this book has been over-hyped I still found it to be an interesting, yet simplistic, look into a subject that causes furious debate. (I'm sorry I don't want to be more specific because I don't want to ruin the story for someone else.)

I will warn you that the first ten or so pages are a bit puzzling but by the time you have read about twenty pages you will have figured things out to a degree. You will probably also figure out what is really going on long before it is spelled out.

This story is both sweet and distressing....

From the flap:
As a child, Kathy-now thirty-one years old-lived at Hailsham, a private school in the scenic English countryside where the children were sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe that they were special and that their well-being was crucial not only for themselves but for the society they would eventually enter. Kathy had long ago put this idyllic past behind her, but when two of her Hailsham friends come back into her life, she stops resisting the pull of
memory.

RELEASE NOTES:

(Located at 408 W. Walnut)

I thought this would be a good book to leave at the Moxie because they are currently playing 'The White Countess' which is also written by Kazuo Ishiguro. I'll leave this on a chair in the lobby.

Congratulations on catching this book. I hope you enjoy it. When you finish this book, please journal again and share what you thought about the book. Then, please pass it along for somebody else to read. You could give it to a friend or leave it someplace, like a school, restaurant or wherever you think it might find a reader who'll love it! It would be great if you'd join. Then you could track where your books go. If you do want to join, I'd love it if you would use ALRESCATE- - that's me-- as the name of the person who referred you.

This book was bought in downtown LA in a shop somewhat ominously titled
"The Last Bookstore." I was actually on my way to a bar, but ended up next door instead. I'm glad I did!

I had an intense emotional reaction to this book. It has really stuck with me. In lieu of writing my own review, I think James Wood's piece says all the things I felt, but couldn't articulate about the experience - and more! And who can argue with James Wood? Well, a number of people, truth be told, but I digress. Anyhoo:

(be warned - spoilers ahead!)

A few accurate phrases culled from reviews to get you in the mood: "a real heartbreaker" "banal, yet quietly menacing" "speculative, experimental and humanly moving"

Side note: apologies to the next reader of this particular copy. I smashed two spiders with this hardcover. Unfortunate, yet unavoidable. It was a reflex action both times. The book has been cleaned.

Cheers!
