Another Mars adventure story, this one focusing on the politics of space travel and exploration: an ambitious, dynamic, devoted and somewhat selfish (and therefore not wholly likeable) planetary geologist, member of the first scientific expedition to the red planet believes he has seen evidence of a (perhaps) now-extinct Martian civilization. He undertakes to re-orient the expedition's scheduled investigations so as to pursue this line of exploration, to the detriment of the studies of some of his colleagues. A well-written page turner, the story's Martian mystery remains intact throughout, as it does in real life even now. There is a sequel that I have yet to read.
