Love and Other Impossible Pursuits

Begins in abject misery, the author can truly write the grief of the loss of a child. Memorable female characters and a small precocious boy who is both exasperating and laugh-out-loud funny. Poignant at times, I also had to work hard to 'like' some of the characters' choices throughout. A sharp urban wit permeates. Ultimately, not sure the psychological explanations aren't a bit too pat, it was still absorbing. "Carolyn" reminded me of The Nanny Diaries. But there was one point which moved me to tears (rare in a book.)

Received in today's mail. Looking forward to reading this one. Thanks.
This one is actually more like an 8.5. I picked it up at 3PM and by 11PM I'd finished it. It was just too engrossing to put down. And I liked the fact that the main character was very real, very "warts and all".
Lent to Meaghan.

Sending to DianaCoats as a RABCK from one cat lover to another. I hope you and Andie have as much love and happiness together over the years as Socks and I had. Give her a skritch for me, please!
A lovely book arrived in the mail from Jennifer today...in loving Memory of her "one true cat" Socks, the democrat. The world is in dire need of more democrats these days so Socks will be missed personally by Jennifer but collectively by us all.
Andie rolled right on over for her skritch and I had one of those moments of just being grateful that she loves me every day without question. Truly a gift.
This book is timely because I am taking a road trip with another bookcrosser who has become a good friend. We decided we were going to do what we are calling our "California Book Club". Each of us is picking a book and not telling what it is and we will read it out loud to the other one on our trip...A Human audio book-club, if you will. So...since Jennifer is not only a reader but a writer as well...I'm going to take that 8.5 as high praise indeed and choose this as one of the first annual California Book Club picks.
Jennifer...I appreciate the book and hope that you will find another "true cat" soon...not to replace Socks, for that can't be done, but just for now...for the personal and the collective.
Affectionately,
Andie and Diana

Even with our good intentions with the California Book Club, neither of us were able to get into this book. We tried. More than once. Perhaps if we are meant to read it, it will come around again.
Taking this to a Bookcrossing meeting tonight, hoping someone else will find it interesting...
