A great story about the lives of five different women, how their lives interconnect while working for "their man", (euphemism for upper-class pimp, in a way). Tells why they're in the busines, a little bit of detail about the actual act, but mostly is about their lives and how they change through the course of the novel, like with any good character development and story arc. Each chapter is told by a different woman, and at times I found their different voices quite hard to distinguish, especially that of Rockelle and Rosita (the similarity in names didn't help, either!) However, by the middle of the book each character had somewhat a life of her own, and by the end I found myself truly interested in the development of a couple of them. It's a fascinating way of telling the story, as it lets the reader choose their favorite "protagonist" and cheer them on from a-far, as it may be.

A hardback book which at this point and time is missing it's dust-jacket.

Taking to the 2006 NZ Convention with me.

Found it in a cafe in Dunedin while waiting for a (much needed coffee).
Couldn't resist the idea of a travelling book- and thinking about its possible destinations and all the many and varied people to whom a travelling book might appeal. Cool idea.

The concept 'Travelling Book' appeals much more than the actual book itself did. I found it a little depressing.

Anyway, will release it either at another Dunedin location, or pass it to one of my bookclub friends.

I arrived at work one morning to find the book on my desk. I had heard about these travelling books, but until then had not caught one myself. Although I was excited at catching the book, it still took some time before I read it - my philosophy about reading is that it is a 'treat', which I only indulge in when I have done all of the other necessary tasks! This weekend was a long holiday Weekend (Queens Birthday) and I had already planned to have some reading time. It was a very easy read, with rich descriptive language which meant I was quickly able to identify the characters. Although the subject matter was something I probably wouldn't have chosen myself I soon found that I was empathising with the characters and their live situations.
