Stephanie Plum, the trash-talking New Jersey bail bondswoman of this popular series, is tracking Maxine Nowicki, who's wanted for skipping out on a car-theft charge lodged by her ex-boyfriend. Now the ex-boyfriend's very interested in getting back the love letters he supposedly wrote to Maxine. But what he's really looking for is the secret on which Evanovich hangs her screwball cast of colorful minor characters, including Sally Sweet, a cross-dressing drag queen; Lula, the 250-pound ex-hooker who works for Steph's boss; Cousin Vinnie, the bail bondsman; Grandma Mazur, who packs a Glock and is always looking for a little action; and Joyce, a wannabe bounty hunter who's been cramping Steph's style since she played pass the salami with Steph's ex-husband. The action doesn't get much farther from Trenton than the Jersey Shore, but when Steph's apartment and car are blown up by the others on Maxine's trail and she moves in with Joe Morelli, the handsome, arrogant cop she's been hung up on since high school, it gets hotter than the craps table in Atlantic City.

arrived safe and sound today -- I have a few to read before it but will not be too long. I will comment once I have read it and then send off to the next reader.

April 7 ~ started reading this one today -- pm'd MissGrace for an address on this date as well.

April 8 ~ Another fun read by Evanovich. I have to say that I laugh out loud more at this series of books than I have at any other book I have read thus far. The stories are not deep and they are a nice change from the deep literature that I tend to read at times. This was a fun and quirky book. I was happy that there was more of Grandma Mazur in this book as book 3 had very little of her --- I happen to be a Grandma Mazur fan myself. Thanks for letting me join this ring.

**still waiting to here back from MissGrace -- I will send it as soon as I have an address.

April 10 ~ MissGrace asked to be skipped - waiting for MomsL8 address

Journal Entry 8 by MomsL8 from St. Louis, Missouri USA on Thursday, June 8, 2006
I'm so sorry everyone! This bookring has NOT stalled - other than by me, of course! I was waiting for Three to arrive so as to read them in order, and I sat down and read half of it, and then major life crises (seems to be my modus operandi this year)interrupted. I need can finish Three hopefully this weekend, and then by June 15, all crises will abate, and I can speed read through Four. Thank you so much all for putting up with me! I so wish I could just spend all my time....reading!

Thanks again everyone!

Jill

So funny! The new characters Sally Sweet, Sugar, and even Bernie the produce guy added a lot to this series. I didn't care for Grandma Mazur (sorry, snowy!) or Lula in the first three books, but they were a lot more subdued here (probably to make room for Sally's outsized personality!)

The pacing and descriptions are much better now than in the previous Evanovich books I've read. Here's a great example from page 198:

"The rain stopped halfway home, and Trenton showed no sign of relief from the heat. The hydrocarbon level was high enough to etch glass, and the highways hummed with road rage. Air conditioners were failing, dogs had diarrhea, laundry mildewed in hampers, and sinus cavities felt filled with cement. If the barometric pressure dropped any lower everyone's guts would be sucked through the soles of their feet into the bowels of the earth."

You don't see writing like that in your run-of-the-mill supermarket romance!

Oh, and Stephanie gets another couple of crazy haircuts: one from Morelli himself; the second at Grandma Mazur's favorite salon.

Mailing to totoroandmei later this afternoon, along with the jokes and the postcards (I contributed one of South Carolina).

I have been waiting for this. Thanks! I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the whole series!

I love this series, and this book was no exception. Although probably a bit unrealistic, the situations Stephanie gets herself into are hilarious, and always make for a fun read.
