"A story of passion and idealism, which describes a group of men and women in the Middle Ages whose destinies are fatefully linked with the building of a cathedral. In a country torn by civil war, two generations struggle to rise above their primitive circumstances and create something beautiful."

Lots of people list this book as one of their all time favourites - I thought it was OK, but not spectacular! It was much too long and a lot of the characters seemed two dimensional to me. I was disappointed as I expected something much better.

Sending to an unsuspecting bookcrosser as a RABCK ;-)

This arrived at my parent's house today, or at least that's when I was informed of it! Thanks ever so much raeliz64 - this book is part of my BBC Big Read goal.

Very enjoyable! This sucked me in very quickly, but I had to be quite restrained about reading it due to revising for my exam. I chose it cos it was such a hefty book and I thought there was no danger of me finishing in one/being tempted to stay up late to finish it - it took some willpower not to read for longer than my allotted part chapter or so!

I wouldn't say this was a wonderful piece of literature, but it was compelling with a few characters I really cared about (though I agree with raeliz64 that many of them were 2-D) and I found the cathedral building fascinating. Very glad to have read it, so thanks again for the RABCK!!

This will either be passed on to my boyfriend or another bookcrosser sometime in the near future.

Wow, a true epic! It had me up late at night because I *had* to know what happened next. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, though. Almost like he was tying up the loose ends to make it stop! Very interesting about the cathedral building, though, particularly as I have seen many of the design features described first-hand and described in detail in my engineering courses.

Now ready for the further whims of bigcurlyloz...

I am planning on sending this to someone as part of an exchange.

Aargh! Did my usual trick of not doing a JE as soon as the book comes into the house. So bigcurlyloz did not get a thank-you and must have thought the book had disappeared into the ether. Thank you very much for sending this to me. I removed it from my wishlist so why I didn't do a JE I'll never know.

Anyroadup, this is a victim of a cull of Mt TBR. If I haven't read it by now, it's not going to come to the top any time soon. And I know where I can find a copy if I want to read it in the future ...
