This is a book I almost gave away without reading it. I am glad I read it first. I think it is excellently written. There is some violence that is way overdone which is what keeps from giving this book higher than an 8. I have not read any of the other Sword of Truth books, and I do not feel I need to. This book is a great stand alone story and I was unaware as I read it that it is part of a series. I may read more by this author.
