part fairy tale, part legend, part nightmare, part encyclopedia ...

No doubt, this is a corker of a book. The question is do I like it? Have I been fascinated by its sheer weirdness? Yes. Have I been caught by the putrid fertility of the its sub-continental imagery' Yes. Has this novel's smell or rather its ever rotting ever growing stink of life twitched my nose and held me spellbound? You bet! Like I said, its a bl... corker of a book. But then you can be intoxicated by the rot and sheer bountiful life of the humid tropical world without actally ever growing to like it. So do I like this one? I still can't really say. The voice is singular - I guess I'll have to have another go at those 500 weird and poisonous pages.
