I've been meaning to read Alex for ages, because it's one of those NZ books you're supposed to have read (a bit like the bone people or Man Alone), so I thought I'd grab the chance while it was here.
Put simply, it's the story of a race - and of winning, and losing, and ambition, and growing up, and being female, and... life, really. Action from the race is interspersed with the story of what Alex has gone through to get to that point. It's a skilfully used device: the emotional rhythms of the race are mirrorred in the accompanying story, with tension building steadily in both.
