The Catcher in the Rye
3 journalers for this copy...
Still registering. Nothing outlasts the book collection.
This was a strange book. I picked it up and was completely engaged by the the narration, but I can't say that I was enjoying it because it didn't seem to have any point. Then I finished reading it, thought maybe I understood it in a way that I just couldn't explain...since I didn't have anybody to talk through it with I ended up looking up the theme on pinkmonkey.com. Having looked it up and read the what the theme supposedly is...I was initially skeptical. Then I thought about it for awhile and wondered why it hadn't seemed *obvious* to me what the theme was...looking back...it actually makes quite a bit of sense.
Wow, I just wrote a whole journal entry that appears to have no point whatsoever, but I bet you enjoyed reading it, if, indeed, you did read it. Now you know what it's like to read this book, then, I guess. Interesting but pointless unless I tell you outright what the theme is!
It was an interesting, quick read, but a bit on the depressing side.

I had completely forgotten about this book coming so it was a real pleasant surprise to receive it! :) A big THANK YOU to yourotherleft for sending this to me, I know I usually don't fare well with classics but I still want to give this a go. We'll see how it goes!
It could be blasphemy to say this, considering that it's regarded as "one of America's literary treasures" (according to Amazon.com), but I don't see the point of this book. I read some customer reviews on Amazon and I saw phrases like "work of true genius" and "freakin' inspirational" amongst many others and I'm just baffled. I guess maybe I'm a literature retard and I'm not reaching into the depths of the novel to understand the various symbolisms, but to me, it was nothing but the ramblings of a kid who got kicked out of school. Big deal. And yeah, he's had a couple of bad experiences, but so what? It is beyond me how it is deemed as a classic. For me, this is yet another negative experience with a classic; at least I finished reading this, although I don't know why I did, it was painfully boring. I guess I kept waiting for something to happen, for there to be a "point", but nothing ever happened. I think it's time for me to give up on classics...
