Girlfriend in a Coma

"After making love for the first time, high school senior Karen confides to her boyfriend Richard of the dark visions she's been recently suffering. Its' only a few hours later that snowy Friday night in 1979 that she descends into a coma.... she remains in a coma for the next seventeen years."
This first part of the story tells of how her circle of friends grow up without her. A wonderful story of love and devotion and the impact that memory and hopes and dreams have on them.
"Upon Karen's reawakening, life grows as surreal as their television show. With apocalyptic events occurring, Karen, Richard, and thier friends explore the essential mysteries of life, faith, decency, and existence. Amid the world's rubble they attempt to restore thier own humanity."
This second part of the story is quite different from the first. Almost too much so. Coupland tries to prepare us for it (I think) by referencing such things as The X-Files, FX, and drug-use... but the departure takes awhile to get used to. And there is no time to adjust since cataclysmic events happen so quickly. I found it difficult to reconcile the two parts.
That said, I really enjoyed the story and it's "message". I read it in one twelve-hour span and although I didn't like the ending, I didn't view it as time ill-spent.

Received today - thanks, cyber-pixie! Going to start this as soon as I can. Really looking forward to reading it.
From the start, I could not put this book down. I found Coupland's voice to be so engaging and his characters so real. I could not wait to see what was going to happen next.
Almost the entire novel was a surprise - I could not predict what was going to happen next and where it would end up. Saying that, however, I felt that the ending was weak. The book seemed to just kind of end. The last thirty pages or so were very disappointing in light of how much I enjoyed the book, but I would still highly recommend this one to others.

Arrived today. I have a couple of books to read before this one, but I'll put it on the top of my pile so I can have it on its way. Thanks! :D
Finished this today. Meant to have it off by the weekend, but I fell a little behind.
I enjoyed this very much. It still had the same theme as Coupland's Generation X to me -- the whole "what is the meaning of life" thing, but this was better presented. I even had to reread the ending because I had mixed feelings about it, but now, I've decided that it's just perfect the way it is.
Sending off to the next bx-er, tomorrow.

I *loved* this book! It really gave me the willies, and there was a sadness to the ending, which I expect was meant to be uplifting, but I found slightly....unsatisfying...but still a great read! :)
