The blurb reads:

"A shocking murder shatters the picturesque calm of Pennsylvania's Amish country - and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer who steps in to defend the young woman at the centre of the storm...

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: circumstantial evidence suggests that eighteen-year old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and, for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live 'plain', Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within - to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past comes back into her life.

Moving seamlessly from psychological drama to courtroom suspense,
Plain Truth is a fascinating portrait of Amish life - and a moving exploration of the bonds of love, friendship, and the heart's most complex choices".

I bought this as a Not-so-secret-Father-Christmas present for a member of the UK BookCrossing Group.

I received this book as part of a Not So Secret Santa Surprise through the UK Bookcrossers group. I've been wanting to read it for ages and am so pleased that I was sent it. Thanks also for the beautiful Christmas tree ornaments, the licorice allsorts and the jelly beans. It was a wonderful gift.

I'm really looking forward to reading the book, hopefully I'll have a chance to read it soon. I'll journal it again when I have read it.

Thanks again! :o)

Journal Entry 3 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Friday, January 6, 2006
I loved this book, I read it over four nights and really enjoyed it. It was a fascinating insite into the Amish way of life, as well as being a brilliant murder mystery. As with other Jodi Picoult books that I've read, I had suspicions all the way through the book about what could have happened, but these kept changing as the story progressed. I did suspect the person who did do it (won't mention who that person was so as not to spoil the book for the readers who come after me!) but I didn't suspect the way they did it. The end was written in a way that really did shock me, and left me reeling a little bit.

This was a great gift to send me, so again thank you WormyOne! :o)

I'm now on the look out for more Jodi Picoult books.

Journal Entry 7 by Rillaith from Wokingham, Berkshire United Kingdom on Monday, February 6, 2006
Arrived at the weekend, although I've had now 6 ring books arrive together, so it may be a couple of weeks before I can read this and pass it on. Good thing I get 2+ hours of uninterrupted commuting reading time each day :)

Journal Entry 8 by Rillaith from Wokingham, Berkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 28, 2006
Just a quick update as I've had this for 3 weeks now - I have one book ahead of it which I'm only just starting, so should be able to send it on its way in the next week or two :)

Journal Entry 9 by Rillaith from Wokingham, Berkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 21, 2006
Wonderful book! Picking this up after Caleb Carr's Angel of Darkness was like a breath of fresh air - and the contrast was noticable in how long it took to read each of them. Three weeks for the Carr, and about 4 days for this! I absolutely have to add Picoult to my wish list...

Actually finished this last week, but didn't get a chance to journal it due to moving stress. Ready to be sent on as soon as I get Jaycee1972's address.

Journal Entry 10 by Jaycee1972 from Belper, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Monday, March 27, 2006
Looking forward to this book which I received today in the post. I have 2 other rings to read first but will get to this asap as I love Jodi Picoult books. Thanks.

Journal Entry 11 by Jaycee1972 from Belper, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 5, 2006
Ok, I couldn't wait any longer to read this as I love Jodi Picoult books. This one didn't disappoint. I read it in less than 24 hours (while off sick from work) and just couldn't put it down.

I have been doing battle with 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' which I am probably going to give up on now for a couple of weeks now and I can relate to what Rillaith said, this book was like a breath of fresh air.

Thanks to sunflowergirl for sending this out as a ring. I am sending a message to marie-therese who is next on the list for her address and will then get this in the post asap. Hope you enjoy the book.

Journal Entry 12 by Jaycee1972 from Belper, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Thursday, April 6, 2006
Marie-therese has asked to be skipped so pming cloggy for address.

Journal Entry 13 by Jaycee1972 from Belper, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Saturday, April 8, 2006
Posting to Cloggy early next week - if I don't manage to get to the p/o before they shut today :)

Hope you enjoy the book.

Journal Entry 15 by cloggy from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 3, 2006
This is the third of Picoult's books I've read and they all follow the same pattern - interesting court case, involving young peope, a lawyer who's private lives gets intertwined with the case.
For the first couple of chapters this set pattern bothered my. Why does she never write about anything else, I asked myself. Then the story kicked in, grabbed me and I forgot all about the way the book was written and just let the gripping story drag me all the way to the final page. She's such a great story teller.

In the post to mellowdaisy this morning.

Journal Entry 16 by mellowdaisy on Friday, May 5, 2006
This arrived today, thank you to cloggy for posting and thank you to sunflowergirl for sharing the book! I'm afraid I'm a bit inundated with bookrings at the moment (why do they always all arrive at once?!) and this one is third in the queue but I will try and get through them as quickly as possible, I'm guaranteed some reading time in my lunchbreak now as I have a new job so fingers crossed!

Journal Entry 17 by mellowdaisy on Friday, June 2, 2006
I have only read one of JP's books before this one but I liked it so much I added her to my wishlist. This book was no different, I was so gripped the whole way through, always wanting to find out what happened next. I had my suspicions too but couldn't make up my mind for sure, and there was always certain things that didn't fit. That was what spurred me on to the end, just wanting to know what happened and what was going to happen at the trial. I would definitely recommend this book, I have signed up for a couple of JP rings, and am on the look out for the rest of her books!

I've PMed chelseagirl and will post this on as soon as I have an address.

Journal Entry 18 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, June 10, 2006
Arrived safely a few days ago, many thanks - sorry for the delay but I've had problems getting into this site! Joins a huge pile of ring books, I'm afraid, but I'll read it asap.

Journal Entry 20 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Monday, August 14, 2006
What a fantastic book! This is the third Jodi Picoult novel I've read and my favourite so far. The combination of the complicated murder story, the strong characters and the insight into the Amish way of life was fascinating. Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to read this!

I'll PM inver and get this book moving asap. However, I'm away on business next week so if I don't get an address before I leave there may be a delay :0(

Journal Entry 21 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, August 19, 2006
Arrived today thanks Chelseagirl. I have just started another bookring but this will be next in line, so it may be a couple of weeks before I get to this one. Will try and get to it ASAP. Really looking for to reading this looking at the reviews it doesn't look like a book I will be disappointed in.

Read a couple of pages and it is gonna be very difficult not to read it before I have read the other bookring I am in the middle off!!!!!

21/8/06 Reading this at the moment....loving it.

1/9/06 Nearly half way through it...trying to get through it ASAP
9/9/06 Finished, have 'dsc' addy so will get it on the move again next week hopefully.

Journal Entry 22 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, September 9, 2006
Finished......what a fab storyteller she is. It didn't turn out to be the person I thought it was at the end and that was a surprise!! Can appreciate all the research she must have down into this simple way of life the Amish live.

Thank you so much Sunflower for sharing this wonderful book with us all. I appreciate having had the chance to read it. Will be posting it on to 'dsc' next.

Journal Entry 23 by Inver from Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, September 11, 2006
Off to post this on to 'dsc'. Thanks again Sunflowergirl for allowing me to be part of this bookring.

Hope you don't mind but I am not going to take this on holiday as I am only going to take books that I don't want to bring back with me and can wild release while i am there, but I will get to this as soon as I get home.

Journal Entry 26 by dsc from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Saturday, September 30, 2006
I have just got back off holiday and as I finished a book on the plane I am ready to start into this one straight away.

Journal Entry 27 by dsc from Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 18, 2006
I am afraid I am going to abandon this book. I think possibly I am not giving it large enough chunks of time to really get involved, but it does seem to be dragging. I have got as far as 200 pages but the storyline is all very frustrating. Perhaps I will come back to this book in the future but for now I will return it as I have had it quite a while.

Journal Entry 28 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, October 27, 2006

Recieved safely, thanks dsc.

It nearly spent a weekend abandoned in school. I'd walked past my tray, seen it empty and asked DepPA when she was expecting the postie (I only sent off 6 parcels of books yesterday!). As the answer was 'not until 3 ish' & my fingers and brain had frozen by noon, I popped my head round the door to say farewell and had nearly gone when she said 'Have you noticed, there's another book for you there' ...

It's in the top 5 on TBR, so IWISHIWAS shouldn't have to wait too long.

Journal Entry 29 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, October 30, 2006
Well that didn't wait long. Started Friday evening, finished Saturday morning, with a few hours sleep in the middle. So yes, it was a gripping story, but I did have a couple of gripes - one was about something I thought that Ellie should have been more concerned about on her own account towards the end of the book, and the other ... well, I can't explain without a spoiler (I don't know how to code it so you can't see it until you click) so you'll just have to see if you think so too!

PMing IWISHIWAS (not in Carrickfergus) for an address ...

Going into town to post now.

I've only gone & printed the label on the wrong side, so more sellotape than intended - sorry IWISHIWAS

Journal Entry 31 by IWISHIWAS from Stockton-On-Tees, County Durham United Kingdom on Monday, November 20, 2006
Sorry guys I have just realised that I did not make a JE when this book dropped through my letter box. Anyway I have read it now and will be sending it to betty22 as soon as I get her address.

I thought it was an okay read, I don't think it would have held my attention so much if had not been a ring and I felt obliged to keep it moving! Like CaterinaAnna I have a few issues with the character Ellie and felt Picoult could have dealt with her personal life a little more convincingly. Hope the ring keeps moving!

Journal Entry 32 by IWISHIWAS from Stockton-On-Tees, County Durham United Kingdom on Wednesday, November 22, 2006
I will be posting this to Betty22 tomorrow.

Journal Entry 33 by Betty22 from Wandsworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, November 25, 2006

Looking forward to reading it as I have read 3 or 4 others of hers, and I loved Witness....

Journal Entry 34 by Betty22 from Wandsworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Thursday, December 7, 2006
Finished this last night and really enjoyed it.
Like sunflowergirl, I had my suspicions, but this didn't detract from the storyline for me, and I thought it was well written.
Am pming mallary today for her address and will send on as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 35 by Mallary from Ginestas, Languedoc-Roussillon France on Thursday, December 14, 2006
Received today, many thanks.
I can't wait to get started as I've never read a Jodi Picoult novel before.

Update: 18/12/06
Started the book last night and I can hardly put it down!!

Journal Entry 36 by Mallary from Ginestas, Languedoc-Roussillon France on Monday, January 22, 2007
This was my first Jodi Picoult novel.
Sadly, I guessed early on 'whodunnit' so I felt the book dragged on a bit. When I reached the end I found my suspicions were correct so I felt a bit deflated! But I won't let it put me off reading more Jodi Picoult as I think she is an excellent writer!
I would recommend this book to anyone. Thanks for the opportunity to read it.

Posted 20th Jan to samulli in Germany.

Journal Entry 37 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Monday, January 29, 2007
The book arrived today. Thanks mallary for sending it on.
I'll get started on it as soon as I finish the other bookring book I'm reading at the moment.

Journal Entry 38 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Saturday, February 3, 2007
This is the third Picoult book I've read and I still can't make up my mind if I really like her style or not. She definitely writes good stories and her characters are mostly interesting and believable - up to a point.

I wanted to read this book, because I knew virtually nothing about the Amish before and I hoped to learn something about their lifesyle. Which I did. Although this mangled version of german they are speaking made me cringe, it was also unintentionally funny sometimes.
The strange culture and belief-system of this religious sect is described quite well, and after hating Katie's character at first, because I thought her stubborn denial of obvious facts was just plain stupid, I actually got to understand and like her in the course of the book. Just like the rest of her family (well, with the exception of Aaron - he is just aggravating me no end).

What I still don't understand, much less like - and probably never will - is their faith and the things it entails. But that's not Picoults fault or has anything to do with her writing. I just think religion is a bad thing. It doesn't matter which religion, it just makes people act crazy and gives them an excuse to stop thinking rationally. But that's just me, so it doesn't say anything about the book.

Another thing that bored me a little bit were the courtroom scenes. If I want lawyer babble I would read John Crisham. I think this part of the book didn't have to be quite as detailed, since all the interesting developments took place outside the courtroom anyway.

All in all, it was an entertaining read, but the story didn't touch me too deeply and probably won't stay with me for a long time.
The book itself definitely won't stay, as I still have TheWhiteLion's address, so I will send it out on Monday. Thanks for letting me join this ring, sunflowergirl!

Journal Entry 39 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Tuesday, February 6, 2007
TheWhiteLion asked to be skipped on this, because he hasn't the time at the moment, so I sent the book to rootmartin instead. I had to use surface mail, as airmail is just ridiculusly expensive nowadays, so it will probably take a few weeks to reach her. Sorry for that.

Journal Entry 40 by rootmartin from Wellesley, Massachusetts USA on Wednesday, March 28, 2007
Thanks, samulli, for shipping this across the ocean to me. It arrived safe and sound this morning. I'm really looking forward to reading it as I've thoroughly enjoyed every Picoult novel that I've read to date.

I have a couple of bookrings ahead of this one but will start in as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 41 by rootmartin from Wellesley, Massachusetts USA on Monday, April 23, 2007
I finished up this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. That said, it's the third Jodi Picoult novel that I've read and it was probably my least favorite of the three. However, no complaints here as it was far more intriguing than most books out there.

I'm popping it in the mail to ralieghdog now. Hope you enjoy!

Journal Entry 42 by RalieghDog from Scottsdale, Arizona USA on Friday, April 27, 2007
Arrived today. I disocvered this week I actually have a copy of this on my own TBR pile. I am sure I am not the only that has happened to, HA HA. I wouldn't have mattered anyway I always like reading the bookcrossing books the best, all the good karma passed along.

Journal Entry 43 by RalieghDog from Scottsdale, Arizona USA on Wednesday, May 16, 2007
This book is still in great shape considering its travels. This is the first Jodi Picoult book I have read but I have seen a lot of great buzz on her writing in the BC forums. I was a little disappointed in this read. I thought the story repeated itself again and again without enough new intrigue being offered. I cared about the characters especially Ellie and Katie but would have like to have seen more attention payed to the other family members and the Amish life style, because that is what I enjoyed most about reading the book. The ending was touching but not such a surprise as others have mentioned it was not to hard to surmise that is what happened. For me I found this to be only an average reading experience but was surprised that the characters and setting stuck with me for a several days after the book was finished. Sometimes a book will surprise you like that. Thanks all for passing it along and Sunflowergirl for sharing it. Is this the end of its journey?
