I adore this beautiful little book, dedicated by author Barbara Cooney to St. Nicohlas, patron saint of children, sailors and maidens. St. Nicholas' day is coming, December 6, and it seems like a good time to release this beautiful, beautiful children's book that is like a parable for bookcrossers. The maiden Miss Rumphius has a lovely childhood and adulthood. Among other things, she works in a library and travels the world. The question that she faces is how to make the world more beautiful. There's a wondrous answer and a plea for us all to consider this. This arrived too late for the Girls 2 Women Bookbox that was here in my house for a month. I'm sending this to guinaveve because I released two of her books from that bookbox. I hope that she and a young soul who likes to wear ribbons will particularly enjoy the story. I'm releasing it in honor of St. Nicholas who is very much with us here in the USA in his brash American, commercialized guise. I hope that we can all remember the true spirit of giving and of beauty that his presence in this season is really about.

I love the cover art on this book. I can't wait to read this book with all three of my children. I think they will all love it, my daughter in particular.
Thank you for sending the box, and with so much to share with my children. Christmas break starts in a few days. It will give us time to enjoy these books while they are out of school.

Journal Entry 4 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Wednesday, December 21, 2005
I read this to the kids yesterday and they totally loved it, as did I. Both the illustrations and story were so wonderful. The premise of the story is so beautiful.
My oldest son noticed as I was reading near the end, that Miss Rumphius had momentos of all her travels sitting around her home. The kids had a good time picking out things from her previous trips that were sitting around her house when she settled down by the sea.
This is going to be one of those books I keep an eye out for when at the bookstores and sales. I would love to find copies to pass on to my kids' teachers to share in the classroom.
I am going to make this copy PC for now as I can't part with it. We will definately be reading it over and over.

Mom has been reading this to us for awhile now. We like it. She said she was going to share it with some other people now and we should get it back later.

I am putting together a bookbox. I need a book that will stay in the box so that the participants and I can keep track of the box. Because I want to share this book anyway, I have chosen it to be that book. THIS BOOK IS TO REMAIN IN THE BOX THROUGHOUT UNTIL IT COMES BACK TO ME. It is to be journaled when the box is received. When the box is sent on controlled release notes should be made for it or a journal entry to indicate it is moving again.

The box is for books that are Well Traveled. Each book in the box must have at least 3 journalers. The final journaler (the person participating in the box) must have read the book all the way through. PLEASE KEEP THE BOX NO MORE THAN 2 WEEKS. Such a very dear book. Every section had purpose and brilliance in it. There is not a person who couldn't learn something from Miss Rumphius's example. I must go to the bookstore for my own copy.

Hooray! The box (and this book) are home. I am so excited. I have looked through the books that came with the box and am eager to start reading. I was also surprised to get 3 extra books. I sent out 10 and got back 13, so that is a nice bonus.
Thanks to all who participated. I must say, this has been my most successful box so far. It moved along just as it was intended. I may do another box like this in a few months once I get some more books together that fit the theme and all who participated in this one are more than welcome to join in again.
THANKS!!!

I am cleaning up my BC shelf and making sure that what is on my online shelf is actually on my real life shelves. If this is a kids' book, my kids probably have it. If it is an adult book, I probably loaned it out and didn't get it back. Otherwise, I am just not sure.
If you are the finder of this book, welcome to the site. Please make a journal entry so that I know it has been picked up and found. To do so is free and you can do it anonymously. You can read the book or not, keep it, pass it on to someone else you think might enjoy it, or leave it in a public place like I did.

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
