In the autumn of 1941 Sammy Adams found a sad and lonely little girl called Phoebe wandering the bomb-scarred streets of London. Boots and Polly achieved their hearts' desire, while Boots's French-born daughter Eloise married her swashbuckling Colonel in Alexandria as Japan attacked the American fleet in Pearl Harbor and Tim was wounded and taken prisoner of war. Despite the war escalating and German bombers still raiding London, the old wartime Cockney spirit remained well to the fore.
