One from a friend's decluttering. I shall try to read this one before releasing, it looks fairly intriguing.

Reading and passing on to catsalive, as part of the "Make me read it!" relay.

I have to say a great big THANK YOU!!! to catsalive for asking for this book, so I finally got off my bum and read it. (Or, rather, sat down on my bum and read it...)

I don't think I quite gave it justice, it's a beautiful lyric poetic book, and I need more sleep before I can properly tackle a book like that. But since sleep isn't really an option, at the moment, I read it anyhow. It's a fascinating story of two girls, abandoned by their parents, who end up living with their eccentric aunt whose idea of housekeeping is hoarding. (Coming from a family of packrats, I rather understood her obsessions.)

It's a quiet story, which while it tells of dramatic events, they all seem to take place in a dreamworld that isn't really here. (Or maybe I could do with more sleep.)

My only quibble: I have now read "transient" so many times the word has lost all meaning.

I'm popping this one in the post to catsalive today! (If I can brave the potential rain at lunchtime.)

Hmm! How disappointing. I expected quite a lot from this book. I like this type of quiet, language-driven tale about small lives. Well, I usually like them but I'm afraid this one left me cold. At no time could I empathise, except, maybe, with the grandmother, briefly. I do feel that Lucille may have been deserving of sympathy as she fought her way out of the quagmire, but I couldn't rouse much emotion for any of them.

There are a lot of nice words here, but the delivery doesn't work for me. Maybe too many 'beautiful' words trying too hard, so that I lost the thread, & the lyrical quality that others have felt has escaped me. Nothing rang true & the meandering was just meandering, not floating along on a musical, dreamlike journey.

I really wanted to like it, but am underwhelmed. I have Gilead on my TBR but right now I'm thinking life may be a little too 'transient' to put myself through that as well.
