I read this in the plane from Newark to San Fransisco. it was OK. I'll write more later ... just wanted to update before I release.

Update: I saw this book was highly recommended by a fellow travel essay junkie. Unfortunately, the "used" copy I paid a hefty price from amazon.com used books was a xeroxed copy with color, photo shop cover. Anyway, I was excited to read it.

But it was disaapointing in a way. I had high expectations, but the book is a little dated. The main character was a travle wimp who backpacks with a friend's girlfriend for 3 months to India. The guy gets ditched because he keeps pushing the bounds of friendship/sexual relationship with this girl. She is guilty too, but ...

Anyway, he obviously cares little about the "indian" experience but cares more about finishing out the vacation alone and using it on his CV (at least that is what a journalist accuses him of while he gets stuck on a broken train and singles out the only other "white guy" to hunt down to talk with.

Funny enough, I saw this book on a "for rent" shelf on my last two days in Bangkok -- long after I had released it.

I was handed this book at Angkor Wat during sunset and read it on the bus to Thailand two days later now in Hong Kong I'm holding until after my girlfriend reads it. We are in India in a month so it may be released in it's subject country.
