This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility.

***This was an amazing book. I devoured it and I wanted more. I was sad at the end yet I was encouraged at the same time. It was thought provoking and had the elements of love, friendship, sadness, laughter, mourning, life, death and hope. I found it to be very well written and I was not at all disappointed.

This is the second book I’ve read by Mitch Albom and he really does have the magic touch when he writes. By the end of the book I felt like I knew Morrie. I cried and laughed while reading. I thought back to when my grandpa was sick and dying a few years ago and all that he had taught me about life when he was healthy and we were both younger. Thanks for letting me get a chance to read this book.

Tuesdays With Morrie was sent out today to charlenemartel in Canada.

Okay, I just got done with this book. I started it last night and I haven't been able to put it down. I loved it! I am seriously considering buying all works by Mitch Albom now since I loved his The Five People You Meet In Heaven also.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful book that gave me much to think about, many eye-opening moments and so much emotion. I couldn't help but cry at the end.

hugs

I was on holiday last week so apologies for the delayed journal entry. Have already started reading on the bus this morning and it looks like this one is going to grab me as much as the 5 people you meet in heaven.

Journal Entry 16 by wingkinediwing from Rushyford, County Durham United Kingdom on Thursday, June 8, 2006
A wonderful and inspiring book. Mitch Albom has the gift to remind us what's really important in life - simple things like love, family and friendship. Material wealth means nothing and I guess in theory we all know that but just like Mitch we get drawn into the daily running of our lives like keeping our jobs & being able to pay the mortgage. You put aside the things that matter and I am guilty of it as well but this book reminds us that we should spend more time with loved ones ! Many thanks for sharing this wonderful book.!

UPDATE 15/06
Have PM'd rudifun23 several times but no reply as yet so have contacted the next person on the list.
UPDATE 20/06

I really liked the book a lot and thought its themes worth thinking about, but also I found it a little overrated. Still a very good and worthwhile read!
Have contacted Frangipani04 for contact details and will be sending the book on shortly!

The praise in the bookcover left me suspicious: is this some form of lame self-help book? I started to read it and soon was turning page after page almost without breathing. I read it in 3 hours. It’s a book I’d like to re-read one day. Though I don’t agree with everything that is written, it gives us a lot to think of… I hope to have learnt something from the book. It’s one of those rare books I would recommend to almost everyone.

Thanks for sharing it snowy652! I’m waiting for mariabokmal's address.

30/10 - sent today. Sorry for the large delay!

Book arrived safely today. Have one other bookring book to read (during the weekend) then I will start on this one!

Journal Entry 27 by wingmariabokmalwing from Malmö, Skåne Sweden on Sunday, November 5, 2006
A book that really reminds you to live your life, the way you want to live it. If you can't enjoy it - who will. And you have to do it now, because this moment is the only moment you are in. This is a book that I'd like to read again, to make sure I don't forget to find out what's important to me!

Someone has already sent Rudifun23 a copy of this title, so Rudifun23 asked to be skipped. PM:ing HeatherBells.

Journal Entry 29 by wingmariabokmalwing from Malmö, Skåne Sweden on Thursday, November 23, 2006

Journal Entry 35 by Bibliocrates from Pueblo, Colorado USA on Saturday, February 17, 2007
For years it seemed that everyone was talking about this book. It was everywhere. I couldn't escape it! I wanted to know what all the hubbub was about, which was why I signed up for this ray. I can't decide whether or not I thought this book was as good as so many people have claimed it was, but I can say that I was very touched by it, as I know many people were. This book brought me to tears. I understand its popularity now that I've read it.

For the past couple of months, I have been struggling with the fact that I am going to lose my mother soon, as she is terminally ill. Reading this book brought out many emotions. Morrie's message really got to me. It's never too late to let someone know that you love him or her. Be compassionate!

Thank you for sharing this book snowy652! It happened to be just the right book at just the right time. I will pass it along to missprisy shortly.

I've enjoyed reading the responses that other Bookcrossers have written. Your comments make TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE sound like an outstanding book.

Journal Entry 40 by cbostler from Sandy, Utah USA on Sunday, March 11, 2007
My mother passed away in November 2006 from Alzheimer's disease and my father-in-law passed away six months ago after a long illness.
I desperately needed to connect with someone who could help me find peace of mind. The book TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is filled with loving, wise direction. Mitch Albom and Morrie Schwartz addressed my concerns and gave me hope.
I have already purchased a copy so that I can underline, highlight, and make notes as I re-read it.
Thanks, Snowy652

What a wonderful book! If only we all could look at life through the eyes of Morrie- what a wonderful place the world would be. It was a great lesson on both life and death, and I'm so glad I read it. I will be contemplating this read for quite some time. Thanks so much for sharing this treasure! Sending on to the next in line.

I got this book in the post a couple of days ago but I was at home - no internet! - so I couldn't journal it, and then I actually read it on the journey back to university this weekend.

The book was definitely a short - and easy - read and, although I thought it was inspirational, I must agree with LadySneerwell; in my opinion, the book is a bit overrated. If you loved this - and even if you didn't - 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven' (also by Mitch Albom) is well worth a read. It deals with death and raises similar issues to 'Tuesdays With Morrie' and is definitely a tear-jerker.

Thank you for sharing, snowy652; I am emailing Cross-patch now so I can send the book on its way!

Journal Entry 45 by carriehhh from Oxford, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, May 12, 2007
Sorry about the delay in posting - I'll get it sent 1st class on Monday morning - but I've been really busy with exams/revision/essays (the end of the academic year). Sorry to hold up the ring a bit! Book will be on its way very soon.

Journal Entry 47 by HeatherBells on Thursday, June 21, 2007
Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in reading this. My dad died the day after this book arrived and I couldn't bear to open it, I considered passing it on to the next in line but it was easier to leave it untouched in its envelope.
After a few weeks I did open the book and start reading, it is a valuable lesson to learn - when death is facing you, you do focus on what's really important, family, friends and the blessings in life. I learned it by spending time with my dad, and the book confirmed it.

Journal Entry 50 by newcastlemarga from Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Monday, July 30, 2007
I've had this book for a month now and just haven't felt like reading it at all. I read The Five People You Meet in Heaven and For One More Day by the same author, and although they both had interesting and unusual plots, by the end of the second book Albom's soppy, sentimental style was really beginning to grate. So I've decided to sent Tuesdays with Morrie on to the next participant.

Meeko14 has asked to be skipped, so I'm PMing QueenSissi for her address now.

I really loved this book! Remember to live your life when you are alive, enjoy the small and great pleasures. Take good care of your loved ones, and they will love you back.

Mitch Albom has written a wonderful book that really makes you take a break and realize what is important in life!

Just came back from a weekend hill walking, and the book was waiting for me. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 57 by wingHaugtussawing from Stavanger, Rogaland fylke Norway on Saturday, October 27, 2007
What a wonderful book! Books like this always make me question my life and the way I live it. Do I spend enough time with my loved ones? Do I manage to see the beauty of the everyday life? Or am I just as materialistic as the next person?

I recognised my father in Morrie. My father made us continue with our everyday lifes when he was ill. He managed to laugh his way through a lot of his illness. And I feel really lucky that I had managed to take a proper goodbye with my father before he passed away.

I am a bit reluctant to pass on the book - as this is one of the books I'd like to read a bit from now and again.
But, of course, I'll pass it on to hioniam as soon as possible.

Thank you snowy652 for sharing this wonderful book, and for introducing me to the writing of Mitch Albom.

Morrie has arrived! I have one other ring ahead of this one, then will get to it! Thanks ...

Journal Entry 64 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Tuesday, February 5, 2008
First, I have to make note of the fact that this book has 25 journalers so far ... which I figured spoke volumes about it before I even cracked it open!

I have heard much about this book for quite a long time, so I'm very glad that I've finally gotten to read it. I read the entire thing on my flight from Dallas to Chicago tonight. It was insightful and wonderful, and sad and poignant. Although I feel I lead a good life, some parts of this story made me question whether I'm spending my time in a manner that I will look back on and be happy about. I want to have no regrets... and this book has many important tidbits which remind us what is important in life (friends, family, values) and what, in the end, really is not (money, success, fame).

Overall, a wonderful book. I've PM'd madmadge in the UK for an addy. Will journal when the book is on its way.

Journal Entry 65 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Happy Travels, little book!

Journal Entry 66 by madmadge from Alderholt, Dorset United Kingdom on Monday, February 25, 2008
What a long way this little book has travelled and read by so many people. It arrived with me on Friday but I have only just had a chance to journal it today as we're still not on line at our new home. I have started to read it already and so far enjoying it very much. Thank you for including me in the ring and thank you BethanieKay for posting it such a long way.

Watch this space!

Journal Entry 67 by madmadge from Alderholt, Dorset United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 27, 2008
What a beautiful book. I'm so glad I read it. I found it both sad and uplifting at the same time and it certainly made me think about my life. Morrie was a very special man with a wonderful outlook on the whole process of life and death. There is a lesson for everyone within the pages of this book.

I am PMing the next in line for address details and will pop it in the post ASAP.

Journal Entry 68 by orange-platypus from Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 4, 2008
I enjoyed this book, and read it in one sitting this afternoon. There's a lot that's genuinely inspirational in this book. The style sometimes grated a little for me, but it didn't matter.

I'm really amazed by how many peple have read this copy and by how far it has travelled - this added to the enjoyment of the book for me. PMing seethroughfaith now for address to mail on.

Yippee! This arrived in Finland today along with a lovely note from orange-platypus in Scotland.

For those who are interested in facts - the book is now in Turku, which is the old -as in former- capital of Finland situated 60.27°N 22.16° E - almost directly east across sea from Stockholm.

Turku

Very much looking forward to reading this - and will then pass it on to Aspen who also lives in this city.

Edited to add: Decided to take this to Tallinn with me this week. I'll read it on the way home ...

Journal Entry 71 by seethroughfaith from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Saturday, April 12, 2008
and I did - tears streaming down my face in the ferry and on the train! This is a beautiful book!

I have to start this with a confession. I knew someone who died of ALS - Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He was my pastor. And so when I read the opening chapters of Tuesdays with Morrie tears were streaming down my face.

That was the end of his driving ...

That was the end of his walking free ...

That was the end of his privacy ...

And that was the end of his secret ...

So many have said that this little book has had a huge impact on their lives. Me too. You see I too have been performance-oriented, and work-driven. This meant I could so identify with Mitch Albom when he wrote

I buried myself in accomplishments, because with accomplishments, I believed I could control things. I could squeeze in every last piece of happiness before I got sick and died … so often I was so busy worrying about and planning for tomorrow to even notice the present, let alone enjoy it.

And there were great questions to answer too ...

Have you found someone to share your heart with?
Are you at peace with yourself?
Are you trying to be as human as you can be?
(p 34)

Dying is only one thing to be sad over .. living unhappily is something else. P 35

I don't see how anyone can read this book and not be affected by it - in a positive way. And I've decided to buy a copy for the English Prize at school this year.

Wow, what a long bookray this has been!!!
Thank you all for the travels of this book!

I got pretty mixed feelings of this book. I liked very much of the philosophy; I've read a lot of philosophical books having similar thoughts and conclusions a few years ago. Those thoughts were not new, but nice to read anyway; knowing is different from adapting. In a way familiar thoughts encourage me to keep on track. And I liked the writing style and structure of the book - it reminded me of Helene Hanff.

But ALS was the tough part of the book, maybe too provoking for me, maybe a bit painful - I'm still a bit confused, even though I finished this book already yesterday. One reason for this must be that my mother-in-law has died off ALS many years ago - I've seen only photos of her; and I've been thinking very much within past years, what kind of person she would have been, how nice it would have been to know her.

Maybe I learned something, even though I didn't find this book comforting - or maybe the healing effect comes when more time passes.

Thanks for sharing!
Book continues travelling in couple of days.
#26 release in Keep them moving 2008 challenge

Edit 21.4:
I'd like to add that this book was quite different from what I expected (I've read the book Five people you meet in heaven, which I liked, and maybe I though this also was something similar) and I hadn't heard any reviews of this book before getting it in my hands. I joined to ring only because of the name of author.

I also started to think, why was this kind of book written, I was trying to find an answer, and to understand, but couldn't find any myself -- but in the end the author mentioned the idea, and it made a little more sense to me, maybe...

Posted today.

Thank you Aspen for the book, once again! Seems to be that we are often in same bookrings? One book is _finally_ leaving from me to you tomorrow.

This is really an impressive bookring, hopefully it gets many more participants along it's way.

I have two rings ahead of this one, though won't take long to read this too.

Almost a month has gone and I finally read the last two chapters this morning while on way to work. I managed not to cry with the last pages, and I guess it was due the harmony and peace of mind that Morris had during the last few weeks of his life. I had my share of tears though, being really emotional I often cry while reading and Mitch Albom makes me cry with every book I have read from him.

I liked the philosophy in this book: you must enjoy your life, and forgive yourself the mistakes you do along the way. Dying is just a part of a deal that we make when we're born. Morries thoughts about life and dying and especially his undying sense of humor really made an impression on me. The book also made me think again about the way we think about dying in our culture, something to be afraid of and something that should be done in secret, hidden place. I hope that everyone who reads this learns that dying is nothing unnatural.

The book is a bit damaged during the long journey, I'll fix it a bit.

I'm passing this book to dotdot within one week, we're supposed to have a local meet-up next week.

EDITED to add: This book is now on the 72nd place on the Most Traveled books list with 30 persons that have journaled the book so far.

Thank you lottuli and everyone who had passed this book on. I'm a bit busy right now but I try to read and pass this on in decent time.

Had this been totally fiction I would have said: "Too sweet to my taste." Truth is stranger than fiction. It's a great thing that sometimes it can be also beautiful. The philosophy of this book wasn't unique, Morrie was.

Thank you for the... surprise! I did not know I'm in the ray. Perhaps someone picked me, as this book used to belong to my Wish List. But I already got a copy since then (-> PC). So this one now travels forward immediately.

Morrie Schwartz seems to have been a very special sort of person (my deceased grandmother, bless her soul, had much in common with him), and this book has an important (and beautiful) message about what is truly important in our lives and how easy it is to totally miss that nowadays.

Thanks for passing this book around, everyone! I'm glad to have read it and will have to see about finding a copy of my own. I've PM'ed the next participant for her address and will put the book in the mail as soon as I receive it.

Update (July 22): already in the mail to marja-leena. Happy trails!

Thank you for sharing the book. I was bit reserved to start with this book. I lost my oncle recently and the topic of death did not feel quite good. The book was a good experience indeed and I can recommend it to anybody. It's about the life and death and all things that matter. The real things that we tend to forget.

The current location of the book is in Karasjok, Northern Norway 69N 25E.I will send it to Greece today.

Yesterday I finished it. What an amazing book.. Life's so simple and so small and we'd be better if we gave and received love. There are some cliches but in the end it's a really unique book. Thanks snowy652!
