Strangers In Paradise, Pocket Book 1
16 journalers for this copy...
Katchoo is a beautiful young woman living a quiet life with everything going for her. She's smart, independent and very much in love with her best friend, Francine. Then Katchoo meets David, a gentle but persistent young man who is determined to win Katchoo's heart. The resulting love triangle is a touching comedy of romantic errors until Katchoo's former employer comes looking for her and $850,000 in missing mob money. As her idyllic life begins to fall apart, Katchoo discovers no one can be trusted and that the past she thought she left behind now threatens to destroy her and everything she loves, including Francine. This is the first edition in the series - don't miss it!

I had the pleasure of participating in an earler Strangers in Paradise bookring offered by midwinter, so when she asked if I'd like to check this book out, I decided it sounded good.
Being a graphic novel (ie, comic book format for us oldtimers, haha!) it's a quick read, and it was fun to be reminded of the escapades of Katchoo and Francine that I'd already read, then learn more about where they went from there, and also some of Katchoo's history. This is an interesting format which can still be complexly-plotted, as it is here.
I enjoyed it; thanks for sharing, midwinter! Oh, and I've PM'd Lpree for an address to send on to.

Well, this will be all one journal entry. I never got this journaled as arrived, but have already read it.
I had read the shorter Strangers In Paradise ring that went around some time ago, so it was nice to read a larger story. I enjoyed it quite a lot, though occasionally would confuse some of the other characters with Katchoo.
Anyway, I'll get this mailed on soon - thanks for sharing this!

arrived in yesterday's mail - looking forward to this!
I had also participated in the earlier SiP bookring and so was delighted that midwinter had started a new ring with this more complete version!
This book arrived almost the same day as Woman at Point Zero, both of which I read imediately after The Ginger Tree - it was one of those wonderful moments of synchronicty! Here I had three books, from very different writers, all exploring women and their lack of power in the world. While I don't think anyone would say that Katchoo is a powerless woman, the facts we learn about her earlier life indicate that at one time she was victimized. This makes her (perhaps overly) sensitive to Francine's silliness and powerlessness in the face of men, although Francine is s-l-o-w-l-y learning to take some power. It also sets the stage for the physical and emotional battles between Katchoo and the mob although I found it interesting that this "women's mob" was apparently initialy funded by a husband and used all the classic male organizational charts and tactics for their business endeavors.
SiP also explores gender, gender roles, and gender steroetypes and this is where it gets most of its humor. I won't risk more boring analysis here, but will say that I love this series and will be looking for more by this author. Thanks, midwinter, for making this a bookring and alerting me to it!
Mailed off to the next person earlier today.

Received and will read as soon as possible. Thanks! =)
I really enjoyed reading the longer version of this story. It would get confusing sometimes. The ending was kind of expected but yet at the same time it wasn't. Thanks so much for including me in this ring. Hope I can read the next pocketbook in the series someday. I already pm'd the next person, so I will send the book as soon as I can.
I enjoyed this one even more than the first. Will send it on to ldpaulson as soon as I get the mailing info. Thanks so much for sharing this one, Midwinter!
This graphic novel joins the growing queue of rings and rays I'm trying to get through. Four books go out; two more come in. Ah, such is BookCrossing. I'll be reading this as time permits. Thanks, midwinter!
Great story with wonderful art -- everything a graphic novel should be. Devoured quickly.
Posted to the next reader in line.
Arrived yesterday! Thicker than I anticipated!
I finished this up a few days ago and just received a PM with the next person's address - I'm glad I checked my email one more time before leaving the office this Friday of a holiday weekend! I'll be dropping in the mail on my way home!
I'm not a big graphic novel fan but have enjoyed this book and the previous ring. I was glad to see Lpree's comment about occasionally confusing Katchoo's character with some of the others - I had some of those moments myself! Or I wouldn't realize at first that I was suddenly reading a flash back scene! And I was a little taken aback when right in the middle of the book there were suddenly four pages of regular novel narration rather than graphic novel format! I'm interested to see how Katchoo's and Francine's lives continue, especially since -- I don't know if this is considered a spoiler or not but just in case, SPOILER ALERT....
Katchoo seemed to get what she wanted at the end, but Francine still doesn't seem to know exactly what she wants...

This book arrived earlier this week. It will be interesting to see what happens to the main characters since their last adventure.
I enjoyed the continuing story of Katchoo and Francine. There were a few surprises in this book. Lots of flashbacks to try to explain Katchoo's past. Most of the same major characters as were in the first book. Overall a quick, enjoyable read.
recvd today
thanks!
thanks!

I received the book today. I don´t know what´s going on with the spain post services, all the packages are delaying too much lately. But anyway, better late than never, right?
The book goes up to my TBR list. As soon as I read it, I´ll pass it on to the next one. Thanks nikel27 for mailing it!

I just finished the book. Although I participated in the previous bookring of Strangers in Paradise, it was good to refresh the first story I had already read and I really enjoyed the whole book. A great story, with nice artwork, I´m looking forward to reading the second part. Thank you very much midwinter for sharing it with us!
I´m going to PM CandyDarling to ask for her address and I´ll give the book to my mother who is currently visiting me in Spain to send it from Greece next week -posting costs much, much cheaper!

I got the book in the mail today. Thank you for the lovely card, asterw! I read the first two stories in the collection right away, and it seems good. I'll try to read the rest soon, but I do have a couple of bookrings ahead of this...
I finally finished this book (sorry for the delay!) and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! I've mostly read superhero graphic novels, but I was intrigued by Strangers in Paradise and decided to give it a try. I loved the main characters, they seemed very real. The first three stories (volume 1, #1 - 3) were funny, but the plot got really interesting when Katchoo's past started wrecking havoc. :) (Volume 2, #1-13) I will keep an eye out for the rest of the books in this series. Thank you Midwinter for introducing me to this great graphic novel!
I loved the poem on page 124:
Echoes of home are haunting me
It must be so, but
Oh God, why me?
Like a stone thrown cross the water
My eyes across the crowd
How vain my hope sails
on the day
til nightfall drags it down
In hell the women scream in pain
That echoes down my hall again.
At night their voices waken me
And I clutch my heart and pray they'll
leave. "A TOAST TO THEE!"
my host did shout, tonight
at dinner, in this house,
yet now designs to murder me
And since I'm home
I cannot leave.
Xeyra asked to be skipped, so the book will go out to darjeeling tomorrow.

Arrived this morning in one of those "oh no your package got ruined" plastic post-office bags, which scared the life out of me, but they just did it to protect an open envelope. All is well with the book, and I am staring it tonight, since I have no prior rings here!
Will pm WestofMars for addy, because I have a funny feeling I'll be done by the end of the weekend.
I haven't read the shorter version, or any other SiP so am looking forward to it!

This actually arrived two days ago, on the 18th, but I'm swamped.
Mid, drop me an e-mail and let me know you definitely want it back. Since I just finished my book club book, I'm going to start this right spanking now. Or... when I get offline for the night.
Thanks, everyone! The book has been through all these people and is still in great shape.

Well, this confirms it. I'm not much of a fan of this series. *sigh*
I tried, Mid, I did.
I tried, Mid, I did.
Strangers, book 1 is back home :)
2 is still traveling well, and 3 should be hitting the road soon. Thanks, everyone, for the continued interest in this series (and, to the folks who haven't enjoyed the stories - thanks for being open minded enough to give the books a shot!)
