"In the winter of 1919, a young mother named Mathilda Neumann drowns beneath the ice of a rural Wisconsin lake. The shock of her death dramatically changes the lives of her daughter, troubled sister, and husband ... Told in the voices of several of the main characters and skipping back and forth in time, the narrative gradually and tantalizingly reveals the dark family secrets and the unsettling discoveries that lead to the truth of what actually happened the night of the drowning"

I really wanted to read this book - partly because it was an Oprah book club book, and partly because it sounded interesting. I was disappointed. I didn't enjoy how it skips back & forth in time, nor did I find it "gripping" as it is described. At least the ending ties everything up nicely, but there were no real surprises along the way for me.

It has been decided by CndBlueRose(next in line for the bookbox), Giz-angel, and myself that I will release all of the books in the bookbox as they both have gigantic TBR piles as do I. So, I'll be releasing it soon.

I read it myself some time ago and enjoyed it. for me, it was not an easy book to forget.

Picked up at Burnaby meetup. The way the author releases one more bit of information with each turn of speaker is interesting. Most people will probably realize what must have happened fairly early in the story - at least before Carl makes his accusations against his dead Mattie - but the emotions that kept people from saying things are fascinating. The role of guilt and fear in our decision making doesn't really change. Another occasion for me to regret the illness that makes it impossible for me to share this book with my Mother. She is of Mattie/Amanda's generation and I wish I could hear her take on it.
