The Hidden World

A strong - and interesting - work of children's fiction, by a Canadian author who has taken Newfoundland's Avalon penninsula, and created a parallel world for the heroine to explore, the Isle of Avalon.
Crossing into this celtic alternate history/present world is a joy to read, and Maeve is a strong and important heroine (traits lacking far too often in children's lit). Nab this and enjoy it!

I popped this one up on the truly neat CasualReader "Book Relay" site, in the 'Canadian Authors' relay that Cestmoi started.

Arrived at my doorstep safe and sound! Thank you! I love reading about Celtic mythology with all its ethereal tendencies, and this book sounds very intriguing!
And barring objection, I'm going to steal your method of writing the BC info onto the page edges ;)

Great story! It kept me from doing the required reading for my Shakespeare course so I came to class unprepared today, but I bluffed my way through it - all's well that ends well, right? ;)
I like how Baird weaves her plot around mythological and theological references, and how she encompases several different cultures - with both real and fictional elements - into one narrative. I found that the story lapsed into cliche a few times, and some bits could've been more polished, but overall the book left me with a good impression. Maybe not enough to cause me to neglect reading "1 Henry IV," but definitely sufficient to overshadow the general introduction to the anthology... :)

Has been offered on the Bookrelay site again, this time in Children's/Young Adult Fiction. Enjoy!
Sent to sugarkane.

This book just arrived and it looks very tasty. Thanks, beatrice-s!
What a pageturner! This was a nice introduction to Celtic mythology, too. More than a little earnest, but that's not a bad thing in a YA novel. And it's always nice to find a teenage girl heroine.
I'll try to find a good place to release this. Maybe back on BookRelay?

This looks really good, I'm looking forward to reading it. I have a feeling it will be making a longish stop here, I'm sure my partner will want to read it too.
Has now progressed to being currently read by other half. Will be released after that.

Picked this up at this month's meetup. Going to add it to the shelf until the next time I feel the need for some fantasy reading.
This novel started off well enough but by the 3rd part of the book, the story started to drag. I found it difficult to read the last 50 pages. The action sequences seemed too long and uneventful yet, there was so much to work with. There were a number of opportunities for the story to pick-up but, unfortunately, the author took none of them.
It still made for an interesting enough read, though in sections, this read more like a history lesson. Though it is a good introduction to the mythology, the writing left a lot to be desired.
I did, however, like the characters and, in this case, it is enough for me to recommend it, particularly to younger audiences who are just being introduced into fantasy.
