"Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. This improvable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years."

My mom sent this to me with a note saying that it was "different" from the stuff I usually read.

So I meant to journal this as soon as I got it from the mailbox tonight, but then the couch got in the way of my journey to the laptop and then I couldn't put it down.

I quite enjoyed this book, even if I did like the writing better than the plot itself. I liked getting inside Christopher's mind, and dear god he reminded me of myself at times. Food touching other food, nope not allowed!

"I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking abou them." Indeed. 100% Agreed. Applies to understanding Japanese culture as well :-D

He also reminds me a lot of the class at the school where mom used to be principal. Dear god did they go freaky if anything was moved.

The ending...Not so much. Already knew about it since someone had spoiled it for me but it just seemed a total non-sequitur.

Thanks for sharing, totoroandmei. I'll get this off to Amberkatze on Monday (payday)!

The book arrived safe and sound this morning! Thank you SKingList for sending it to me and thank you totoroandmei for starting this ring!

Journal Entry 7 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Well I finished my other ring book yesterday afternoon and sat down last night to read a few chapters of this one before going to sleep. My other half was out for the evening and before I knew what had happened it was 2am in the morning and I had finished the book! And my boyfriend still wasn't home :)

This book was really interesting and I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next. I loved Christopher and he made me see things from another perspective. I really liked the diagrams and pictures used and the layout made it all so easy to take in.

I am really happy I got the chance to read this book! Thank you!

I already have the next persons address so hopefully I will get this in the post today!

Received the book in the mail yesterday from Amberkatze - thank you for the postcard! Had a quick look at the book, and I'm enjoying it already.

Journal Entry 9 by TheWhiteLion from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, February 25, 2006
Quite enjoyed reading this well-known book. I feel as if I have learnt a lot about autism just by reading how Christopher experiences events and how he thinks.

I also liked the writing style, and how "Christopher" included descriptions and humour to make a good book.

Have been recommending the book to my friends, and have even lent it to a friend for a quick read, in the hope that she will join bookcrossing! Will mail the book off to the next participant in the ring in the next 2 or 3 days though.

Received safely today - will start ASAP.

Journal Entry 11 by beekeeper40 from Hoveton, Norfolk United Kingdom on Monday, March 6, 2006
I ejoyed this book a lot as it was one of those books that you can't stop reading because you want to know what the outcome is going to be for Christopher. As previous journallers have mentioned some of the things that he did rang bells with me such as reading everything with writing on it and not being able to stop! It was also interesting from the parents point of view as it must be an up hill struggle dealing and living with someone with autism. The sad thing was that he didn't want to be touched and as everyone knows a hug is a cure all for everything!

Thanks for letting me be part of this bookray. Have pmed the next person on the list for their address.

Sent as part of a ring, is next on my list to read, so hopefully will be on it's way very quickly.

This was delivered by the postman yesterday morning, I started reading it yesterday evening and haven't been able to put it down for long. Have finished it. What a fantastic insight into autism and it's effects on people! An amazingly well written book. I loved it. I will now PM the next person on the list!

The other insight this gave me was how people other than dyslexics see things - I have just come to terms with the idea that "normal" people see words (and things!) in their heads - where as I don't! How weird "non dyslexics" are! Needless to say, I am a dunce at maths and mental arithmetic and the discussions around maths in this book could well have been in double dutch for all it meant to me!

On its way to India - what a well travelled book this is!!

Journal Entry 16 by loom91 from Kolkata, West Bengal India on Saturday, July 1, 2006
I'm terribly sorry, but it's possible that I actually received this book long ago. I found this book today in a dark corner where it may have well lain for years without the help of chance. Someone picked it up, considered it garbage and put it there. In any case, now that I've retrieved it I'll try to finish it quickly and send it on.

Journal Entry 17 by loom91 from Kolkata, West Bengal India on Tuesday, July 4, 2006
I finished the book rather fast. I had previously read it in an abridged edition, and I liked the original even better. A modern masterpiece. PMing hshah for address.
UPDATE: hshah asked to be skipped. PMing fio-dagua. Fio-dagua didn't respond, PMing vexter.

It's finally here! I've almost given up hope. Good thing I didn't after all. :)

I'll try to read this as soon as possible, but I have a lot of things going on right now, so it won't be super-fast.

Journal Entry 20 by vexter from Ljubljana, Osrednja Slovenija - Okolica Ljubljane in Ljubljana Slovenia on Sunday, October 15, 2006
I started reading today, meaning just to skim through the first chapter, but I couldn't put it down until I finished it. :)) I loved the story, the viewpoint, the writing style. Although the end does feel a bit cheesy. Like some other readers, I've recognized bits of myself in Christopher (or the other way round), and couldn't help but agree how illogical we sometimes are!

Thanks for sharing this!

fio-dagua asked to be skipped, waiting to hear from Soop.

Edit November 1st: no reply from Soop, PMing Withoutwings.

Edit November 2nd: oh dear, this turns out to be quite a search. Withoutwings wishes to be skipped, so I'm PMing Mellonhead now.

It arrived yesterday, very quickly, especially for how far it travelled. Thank you vexter! I can't wait to read it, the premise seems so interesting.

Journal Entry 23 by mellonhead from Austin, Texas USA on Monday, December 18, 2006
Such a wonderful read. Like everyone else, I finished it very quickly. It was an easy read, but there is a lot to think about in it. The depth of intelligence Christopher had in some ways, but not in others, was facinating. I was sad for the adults around him, but not generally for him, other than when he was frightened. I'm guessing he had Asperger's, but I don't know much about autism (luckily and very gratefully). I agree with everyone else's comments.

This was so facinating that I've put Thinking in Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life with Autism by Temple Grandin on my wish list to read someday. I had heard about this book written by an autistic woman, but I forgot about it until now.

I've Pm'd missprisy for her address. Thank you totoroandmei and Happy Holidays to all of my bookcrossing friends I see in this journal! Missprisy found a copy of this book elsewhere, so I've PMd chaichan.

Journal Entry 24 by mellonhead from Austin, Texas USA on Friday, January 12, 2007
I got a little behind on mailings during the holidays, so this is just going out in the mail today. Thanks again totoroandmei for a great bookray.

Great timing! It arrived in the mail this afternoon... just yesterday I was at the local used shop handling a copy of this same book trying to remember where on the list I was for this ring **laughs** Luckily I put it back down!

I have one other ring book ahead of this, but will get into it ASAP. Thanks for sharing, totoroandmei! Hope you're enjoying Balzac!

I had so much fun with this! The chapters numbered by Prime Numbers... Everything came from such a unique perspective. It must have been a challenge to write, but it's a treat to read!

I just got home and this book was in the mailbox waiting for me. What a great surprise. I can hardly believe how far this book has travelled, it's really amazing. I'm looking forward to reading it and will journal again when I have done so.

Thanks everyone!!

Journal Entry 30 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Sunday, May 6, 2007
I started reading this book tonight. So far I have only read about 30 pages, but already I'm soo curious to find out the solution to the mystery ... ! Christopher so far is intriguing and also makes me a little sad. His views of life are interesting but at the same time his mind is in a way very narrow and his life very circumscribed by his disability, which is quite sad.

I've been curious about this book and have been wanting to read it for a while, partly because I've heard it's very good and partly because a friend of mine is convinced that I have a mild form of Aspergers myself. :-) So it will be interesting to see whether I 'recognize myself' in this story ... :-)

Journal Entry 31 by wingLeishaCamdenwing from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Sunday, May 13, 2007
What a lovely reading experience!! Thank you, totoroandmei and everyone else who has kept this ring moving until it reached Norway. :-) This book is IMO both moving, entertaining and educational. I agree with everyone who has said that the book is hard to put down. Christopher is such a special character, the reader can't help but be drawn into his story. Although I was entertained by the various things that happened I also felt very sad for Christopher, and also for his parents - like someone said, it must be so hard to cope with having an autistic child. (The mother seems to not have made much of an effort to cope, though, while with her family. But personalities are different and not everyone has the same resources of patience or will to patience.) It's so sad to read about Christopher's pain in various situations and knowing that no one can possibly help, he is quite unreachable in many ways. I do get the impression that this is a convincing portrayal of the inner life of an autistic person. As it says in the About the Author section, Haddon has worked with autistic people in the past, and I think that helps the novel enormously. It is a book very well worth reading, deserving of the status of modern classic.
