I think Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield novels are some of the best suspense mysteries ever written. (On his web site he says Jane will be back some day, and I can hardly wait.) This book is in the middle of the series, so there is somewhat less explanation of what she does and why, but it's still a gripping story.
