Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers, who doesn't seem to come out with a book often enough for me to get tired of him. This time he revisits the "world" of American Gods" with a tale of Anansi, the trickster god, the spider. Or rather mostly the tale of Anansi's son's Fat Charlie and Spider. Charlie never knew his father was a god or that he had a brother and once he discovers both things his life changes forever. Changes can be good or bad and things in Neil Gaiman's world are usually not exactly as they seem. As with American Gods this book took a little while to suck me in but I love Gaiman's writing especially about little inconsequential details like:

"After a while it sort of began to rain, which is to say that it was the kind of rain that never comes to a decision about whether it's actually raining or not."

Or his take on individuality and our true selves: " Each person who ever was or is or will be has a song, it isn't a song that anybody else wrote. It has its own melody, it has its own words. Very few people get to sing their own song. Most of us fear that we cannot do it justice with our voices or that our words are too foolish or too honest, or too odd. So people live their songs instead."

This is going out on an international bookring.

It is here! Thank you LyekkaMarengo for mailing the book to me and for organising this lovely ring!

1 December 05: I am glad I've read "American Gods" before reading this book - as I've already met some of the concepts and ideas the author uses here. But I think "Anansi Boys" is better than "American Gods", maybe because it's more readable and it has more lovable characters (my favorite was Daisy). Plus it has a more optimistic ending!
I think that when I was a little girl I've read some stories similar to the ones Anansi presents...but it might be a coincidence:)
I am going to pm the next reader on the list. Thank you Lyekka Marengo for offering me the opportunity to read this great book so soon after being published!

12 December 05: finally mailed today!
