This book was OK. I kept thinking that it must have been a sequel because so much information about the main character was never offered or explored. I felt like I was only allowed to brush the surface of the story. I didn't find it very satisfying - I like to dive in deep.

I got this book from a fellow BCer at our local meetup. This was a good book, I didn't like when he was telling of the past and then thought of the past (even longer ago) and started telling of it. I would have preferred that this was writen a little different, but I still enjoyed the book and I reconmend it.

'Renowned London detective Christopher Banks was born in Shanghai at the begining of the twentieth century, and lived there relatively happily until he was ophaned by the disappearances of his father and mother. Now, more than twenty years after leaving Shanghai, he is a celebrated figure in London society; yet the criminal expertise that has garnered his fame has done little to illuminate his understanding of the circumstances of his parents' alleged kidnappings. Banks travels back to the seething, labyrinthine city of his memory in hopes of recoving all he has lost, only to find that the Sino-Japanese war is ravaging Shanghai beyong recodnition-and that his own recollections are providing as difficult to trust as the people around him. Masterfully suspenseful and psychologically acute, When We Where Orphans offers a profound meditation on the shifting quality of memory, and the possibility of avenging one's past.' -the back of the book

On one of the benches just inside the resturant. I saw the woman who took this book looking at it and then when her husband came up to her, telling him what it was and that she thought it was cool. I looked away to help a co-worker for 1 min. and they were gone... so was the book! Enjoy!
