As the waters rise, the old world is lost. But a new world waits to be found ...

Mara's island home is slowly drowning beneath storm-tossed waves. As mighty icecaps melt, the Earth is losing its land to the ocean - and a community, a way of life, are going to die.

But Mara has seen something extraordinary - hints of a New World, rising from the sea and reaching into the sky. Cities where desperate refugees can surely find safety.

In a desperate bid for survival, Mara and her friends set sail in the ultimate exodus. But Mara's quest will become something even greater - a journey into humanity's capacity for good and evil. And a heart-wrenching story of love and loss ...

It's not often that science fiction aimed at teenagers is done well, but this really was. A well-written book that explores some big themes in a novel way. a little slow to start, perhaps, but once it did get going it seriously captured my attention, and I was disappointed to reach the end (although it ended at exactly the right place).

I LOVED this story. Right from the beginning the story sucked me in and I couldn't put the book down. A very well written and rich story about life as it could be. I loved the aspects of old technology and new technology - the cyberwiz and the story of a world drowning. I hope there is a 2nd book continuing the story and whether the ships found higher land.

Turned up in the mail today, thanks Mundoo!

Looking forward to reading this one. I've got a couple ahead of it, but they shouldn't take too long to read.

Journal Entry 11 by tqd from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Friday, January 13, 2006
Really, really enjoyed this one, thanks everyone!

I was describing it to my Mum this morning (strange how I was reading it when the government was in the middle of actually talking about global warming) and she said "so, it was depressing, it was shocking, it was upsetting. Why did you keep on reading it???"

One word: Mara. I like a plucky heroine, and she made all the doom'n'gloom manageable. (And face it, don't we all want to be as cool as she is?)

And, strangely enough, I never read about Scotland, and never about Glasgow. And guess what? This is the second book in a row I've read that was set (sort of) in Glasgow. (The other was Alexander McCall Smith's Friends, Lovers, Chocolate. And it also had the story of St Mungo's mum and the founding of Glasgow. Insert Twilight Zone music round about here...)

One quibble. (Warning: spoiler follows. For those reading the website, just highlight the text and it'll appear.)

Okay, so why couldn't Fox join her? The portable godgem works with satellites and is obviously solar powered, it could have bloody well worked in Greenland just as well as under New Mungo. I wanted a happy romance, dammit!

I've sent a message to gypsyrose02, and I'll pass this along to her asap.

UPDATE 25-JAN-2006: popped in the post today to gypsyrose02. Happy reading!

Why does it always happen???
It never rains Bookrays and rings but it pours.... returned from a fabulous and action-packed 8 days away, where I didn't even open one page of the 3 novels I took with me, and there is a pile of Rings on my return!!!!

I will get to this.... soon... just not too soon.... but I promise it's safe!

Great little story, kept me very interested but not too stressful to read. I also really hope there's a second in the series. Does anyone know??

Sorry it has taken me so long to read this book. Once I had a chance to get inot it, I couldnt put it down. I found it very easy to visualise everything. It was so well written. It is a shame that it is marketed as young adult fiction. I think it is a book that all should read, and is very pertinant in todays discussions on global warming. I will be recomending this book to others.

Will PM Winterson

I have just been doing some BCing housekeeping and realised that I didn't journal when this arrived home safe and sound about a month ago! How rude of me. I'm so sorry celestewa that it's taken so long to let you know that this beloved book has arrived back in the UK from it's round-the-world trip.

Thank you to everyone who took part in my bookring. I'm happy to say that the book was well received and even inspired others to purchase their own copies. I plan to readvertise for some more readers in the new year so I wonder where it might visit next.
