I am just reading this old book now. It's Pearl Buck though so I am enjoying the story. It is set in India to begin with and that's good too.
This is the least of the books I have read by this author and yet I still think it is right up there. She also brought a mention of the imperial woman into this novel. I am not sure that modern maidens (the young women of today)will think that Miss Brooke Westley is "all that". She was unusually independent for her time though and a good heroine for me. I think the biggest attraction of the whole story, for me, was description of India's history long past compared to its changing times in the mid 20th century.
