The ghost of Confederate Colonel Ben Craig confronts Frankie Matthews and tells her she must save him from death in 1864. Doubting her sanity, she decides to escape Craig Knoll, the family mansion, and tells the ghost her loyalties are to electricity, email and indoor plumbing. He shoves her through a time portal, and she lands facedown in the dirt beside a barn at her home in 1864 Virginia.

Mistaken for a cousin who recently recovered from "brain fever," Frankie is welcomed into the Craig family and makes a couple of startling discoveries. Ben Craig is home on leave due to an injured leg, and has promised his father he will marry Beatrice Craig, his brother's widow, prior to returning to the front. To make matters worse, everyone thinks Frankie's a seventeen-year-old girl who's "teched" in the head.

Desperate to return to her time, no task, however large, will stand in her way. Unfortunately, as she soon learns, her MBA has left her unprepared to survive in a time that requires her to cook on a wood burning stove, milk cows, sucker tobacco, bathe infrequently and use an outhouse.
