We've been to Paris with one, India with another. Now it's time to catch a Greyhound - and much more - and cross America as another intrepid Sarah tries to make sense of the vast new country she's won. After a lifetime of winning nothing but the right to be designated driver, Sarah Darmody strikes it rich in a contest so bizarre most people think it's an urban legend - the Green Card lottery. Her prize: the right to live and work in America forever, all for less than the price of an instant Scratchie.But it's going to cost her much more. Fingerprinted, stripped, x-rayed, measured and investigated, she's warned that unless she commits serious time to her new country and uses her Green Card, she loses it. So, armed with an ugly red backpack, a tattered map, and a wad of hard-earned tips stuffed into her bra, she sets off to circumnavigate the continental US of A by way of another legendary American ticket to ride, the Greyhound bus - and to go where no tourist has even been before.
However romantic it might look in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Sarah soon discovers the Greyhound is more 'Midnight Cowboy' territory, favoured by the desperately poor, the despicably odoured and the dubiously paroled. But she gradually becomes at one with her new tribe as each trip becomes a private Jerry Springer show on wheels, filled with truly unforgettable characters and their stories. And as she is expelled into ever more amazing and improbable places, from New York to Santa Fe, Montana to Minnesota, New Orleans to Savannah, and is inexplicably drawn to a town called Truth or Consequences, she finds herself falling in love with the huge, unwieldy, crazy, ugly, beautiful and mixed-up kid that is the US of A, along with an addiction to airconditioning, fried food and the great American refrain: "I gots rights!'
I started to read this book on the way home today and she gets it, she really does. People either don't get the travelling thing or expect it to always be perfect. It's not. She manages to make this poing without whinging which is the downfall of some travel books.
More on this later when I finish but I'm already seeing a lot of similarities with my own thoughts.

I really loved this book. Finished it yesterday, on the bus no less, and felt very grateful that Greyhound in Australia isn't nearly as bad as in the US.

So so true, and I know exactly what she's feeling. Every time someone asks me what I want to be or do I have at least six answers and wonder whether it isn't way past time to know exactly what I want to do.
And I understand what she meant when her friends said she'd already seen America, my friends said the same after my last trip here. They don't realise that there's a lot more to a country than what you see in a quick three week holiday or in SD's case, a semester abroad and an internship.
Love how she gets the it's not perfect but it's home feeling. There's no country in the world that's perfect but each is home to someone which makes some of the faults less visible. I know NYC isn't perfect but it's home.
I was also surprised and not by her final decision. I understand the indecision. The not knowing which way to go. I was offered sponsorship back in Brisbane and turning it down took a lot of thought, but I don't regret it. I saw and did what I came to see and do and I'm happy with that. I can always come back for a holiday but NY and the US is home to me.

Loved it. You're absolutely right SKingList, she really does get it.
The big thing about this for me was that I really related to Sarah, she could have been me or any one of my friends. While I love the whole travel memoir genre too often I feel too far removed from the writer, I'm unlikely to follow my partner to live in another country, I'm not middle aged, or male, or likely to take silly risks while travelling. Ticket to Ride is a travel story that I could live.
She's certainly opened my eyes to the travel opportunities in the US. I always thought that as long as I saw New York I didn't have to bother with the rest of the country but this has made me reconsider. I think that if I get the chance to go to America again I'll certainly see a bit more of it.
This was well written and quite funny and apart from being a great insight into US culture it also gave me something to think about with regard to the whole concept of 'home'.

Loved this book. It could so easily have been about me and my experiences, especially the chapters about New York and Las Vegas. I also come up with all sorts of weird and wonderful plans while travelling and completely identified with the comment "I could become a celebrity adobe gardener and move to Santa Fe".
The "where does my future lie?" dilemma was experienced by a friend of mine who also won the Green Card Lottery a few years ago. She is now happily living in San Francisco. And to think, I originally thought the Lottery was a massive con designed to scam dollars from foreign innocents who wanted to live the American Dream. Seems that it's actually the real deal!

I finished reading this book on Wednesday night. I absolutely loved this book and some of the things Sarah wrote totally reflect the way I feel. I am an Aussie and no matter how nice another country is, there's no way that I want to give up that part of myself. Being Australian is a core part of who I am and even if I lived in another country, it is one thing that would never change.
I loved reading about all the different people Sarah encountered on her travels - I certainly met a few weird ones when I was in San Fran! :S

This book arrived in today's mail. It will likely be next on my TBR pile.
I really enjoyed this book and found it to be an easy read, it was interesting reading about the authors experience while taking this trip. It made me want to go back to America and explore some of the places she mentioned, especially when she talked about living in some of the towns, she made it sound so enticing that I wanted to as well. I just don't think I'd do via Greyhound!
I wasn't sure at the end of the book whether she is still using her green card, I have a feeling she would be. If its easy to maintain then its certainly not something that should be given up easily! I certainly wouldn't anyway!! :)

I really enjoyed this book. Sarah took me to places in the US that I would never have heard about otherwise. She has a great sense of adventure (and humour too!)I hope she is having more adventures because I would definately like to read more.

I feel like she kind of knew what she was in for, by taking a few buses while she did her study abroad in the US. So part of me feels like she only did it to write the book. I also don't feel like I was in the target audience of people she was writing for, which is ok. There were a few parts that made me laugh, but over all I think I just expected more.
Oh well, I hope everyone else enjoys it! :)

All the way from India to Bosnia! I am sooo excited about this book travelling there. It's my first book to travel to Bosnia and I wish I were going along too.
About the book? I quite enjoyed it - I completely relate to the attachment she has to her homeland - I know I would never be able to consider leaving my India to liv outside, as beautiful and attractive as they may seem...for me - India is and always will be the only place I feel welcome and comfortable. But I love travelling, and who knows if I will ever see America - so this book was delightful as a bedside travel tour! I especially loved the "uhh huuuuh" women....!! Made me feel like I was there. Infact my bottom actually hurts after all that bus riding!!hahaha!
unfortunately I had to leave it incomplete since I do not have the time to complete it. I am leaving the country tomorrow and I dont want the book to still be here while I'm not! So she's off to Bosnia.

Great book, absolutely loved it :) I found myself chuckling and nodding at her observations, especially the ones about american coffee, food and cinnamon and Christmas obsessions. I particularly enjoyed the fact that she doesn't try to be pc about the things she sees, something that ruins so much of travel writing I've come across. I guess the fact that I'm a 24 year old female who's in the middle of the „what to do, where to go“ dilemma makes it easier for me to identify with the writer and her experiences, but I really think this is a good travel book anyone can enjoy. And how can you not wish to visit Santa Fe and Truth or Consequences after reading this? :)

Arrived safely today. I have one other bookring book in the house, but I am used to reading more than one book at a time, so it shouldn't take me long.
This was a very enjoyable read and I'm quite sad that it's over already.
Sarah is a charming narrator and she seems like a very likeable girl. There were so many paragraphs I actually wanted to copy from the book, because I kept thinking "that's me she's talking about" and "I felt exactly the same at the time". But I didn't mark them while I read and I just can't be bothered to look them up now.
I travelled on the Greyhound only once, well twice actually: from Boston to Toronto and back. And, believe me, it felt like it took me forever to get there. I have great respect for Sarah's achievement to actually circumnavigate the whole of the States on these contraptions. And I think, we even met some of the same people...
Her writing style reminded me a bit of Bill Bryson at times (and coming from a die-hard Bryson-fan that's quite a compliment!). I was laughing out loud a lot.
The only little thing that kept bugging me a bit was that she kept referring to her sticky, smelly, dirty clothes (which I can only too well relate to), but didn't ever seem too bothered to actually wash them. I think she mentioned a visit to a laundromat about twice in the whole course of the book. I found that a bit odd, because I remember the first thing I did after arriving in Toronto (besides taking a shower) was washing the clothes I had worn on the bus, because I didn't even wanna pack them in my backpack again for fear they might spoil the clean ones I still had in there.
But except for that tiny thing, I very much enjoyed the book and the memories of my own travels it brought back to me.

I really enjoyed this travel book and it was an interesting contrast with other similar books, such as Irma Kurtz's Greyhound travels. The idea that she was testing out her citizenship was both a good peg to hang the book on, and a good idea in the first place. Well-rounded, self-effacing and thoughtful.
I have to say though that Albuquerque is a *lovely* place really! I've been several times, and to Santa Fe too. I prefer the former!

It's me, Annkrozeika. Is this the longest bookring stall ever? I'm SO sorry! And horribly embarrassed. I haven't been bookcrossing for years and the book was put away in storage while I moved house. It's just been found and I am happy to report, over 4 years later, it is safe and sound. Now where should it be going next?

I just moved into a new house and found a dusty box of books in the attic. This book was in there. I hadn’t heard of Bookcrossing before, it seems interesting. It’s cool to see where it’s been before. It doesn’t look like my kind of book though so I’ll pass it along somehow.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Ok, after reading a lot about Bookcrossing, I thought I would send these books out into the world (there were three Bookcrossing books in the box). I’m in Cambridge for the day and it’s busy so a high chance of the books getting picked up.
