This is one of those books that is sticking with me after I've finished reading it. SPOILER ALERT

Others have been amazed at how a male can write a female so well. I'm not so sure I agree with that assessment. She was obviously female, but for all the drama in her life she didn't feel as dramatic (a female trait?) as I would have expected. I was shocked when she ended up in the institution, since I didn't see that coming.

I was struck by how one bad thing (and I'm thinking more the relationship between her parents rather than the obvious event) can screw up an entire life. She had so much potential but seemed so trapped by a desperate search for acceptance. The moral lesson seemed obvious: only once she accepted herself was she able to accept love from another freely given.

So it's made me ponder more than usual, so that's a good thing. Overall, it's one of the better ones I've read this year.

For most of the first half of the book I kept thinking, "WHY am I reading this?" But I kept reading. I guess I figured there were still plenty of pages left to redeem itself. And it did... some. The second half went a lot quicker than the first because I was much more drawn in to the story and the plot in general. Or maybe it was that Dolores had become more "real" to me by then. In any case, I'm glad I read it. Glad I can now pass it along to someone else.

I caught my book outside of my classroom at AIB. I was talking with some students and we picked it up. We are all excited! I plan on reading the book and then leaving it for another student to find.
