An elderly butler is on a five-day motoring trip through the West Country in the 1950s. The climax of his journey is to be a reunion with his former housekeeper. This 1989 Booker Prize-winner attempts to capture a period in British history and draw a portrait of a man in old age.
So far the book, it just a butler reminising about his life as he travels through the countryside. URGH. PLease let it get better. I can't believe this book won a Booker prize, but the I can't believ The Sea won the booker prize either. His other books are batter thean this. I shall soldier on.....
A butler on 'vacation' finds the time to reminise his life with his old employer and housekeeper. The trip back in time would be interesting but I didn't like the style in which the book was written, and it took a LONG time to get through the 245 pages. I didn like the lead character, Mr Stevens and I would have likes the story if written by someone else.
A Slow and ponderous book, that reflects the trip Mr Stevens took by car. I am not sure how it finished, it just seemed to end. I hope it finds a more receptive reader

Off to Sally for her ARC challenge
Arrived in the mail today with a stack of others, is for the ARC will hang onto until september as requested in case someone else wants it
Was a very gentle slow read - set over a few days as a very British butler has a 'holiday' we learn about life in a upper crust world.
Some very emotional moments - hidden behind a stiff upper lip.
Will hang onto book until 1st September

received in the mail yesterday - thanks sally906
A very delicate and gentle story - told beautifully. (Much better than his Never Let Me Go, I thought.) But if I had been Miss Kenton, I would have found Mr Stevens quite frustrating. Will keep until September unless I find someone doing the ARC who wants it.
Caught today at the Pink Peppercorn Cafe (Toowoomba) at local bookcrossers' monthly meet-up. Will read and release.
