This has been on my 'back of my mind' wish-list for some time now, so I could not resist it.

Journal Entry 5 by Mastulela from Nuneaton, Warwickshire United Kingdom on Saturday, December 3, 2005
All you want to know about Dumas and The Three Musketeers as the modern protagonists seem to adopt the persona of Dumas' characters - or maybe it is just the vivid imagination of Lucas Corso at play.

But there is a more sinister undertone as Corso is also asked to authenticate The Nine Doors, of which there seem to be three surviving books, although the printer Aristide Torchia's last words as he died unrepentant at the stake in 1666, claimed that one copy remained in existance. Here one is taken into the world of rare antiquarian manuscripts and possibly learns more about them than the average reader cares to.

The whole makes a quite tense at times disturbing thriller with a truely gothic ending.

I may offer this as ring, or return it to the OBCZ

This arrived safely on Thursday. Thanks for sending mastulela. i'm almost finished and will journal my thoughts then.

Wow, this was an unusual one. I loved all the 3 Musketeer references, being a bit of a fan of that type of writing. At times, it was very creepy and gothic. I found the ending a bit ambiguous but don't want to say anything else as don't want to spoil it for the next reader. It was one of those endings where you think "so is that person .... or am I just imagining it"?
At times it made me think of Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" but with slightly less twists and a bit quicker to read!
My other question is, how on earth can anyone drink neat gin? Yeuch!
Thanks so much for setting up this ray mastulela. I've PM'ed Rillaith for their address and will send on as soon as I get it.

Fabulous book! I loved the way it's all woven together, although the ending was all tiedied away a bit to neatly and swiftly for my tastes. Nonetheless, it kept me guessing who was behind it 'til the end. I'd heard of this one a very long time ago but never had a chance to read it, so thank you very much for setting this up as a ring!

Off to Gailcm at lunchtime.

I found myself struggling with this book. Though undoubtable well written and interesting concept, I found my attention wandering and counting how many pages I still had left to go. Perhaps it was all the references to books which I have never read, although I will add the 3 Musketeers to my reading list. Just not my cup of tea.
Will post on to tehuti once I get their postal details.

Thank you gailcm for the magnet that came with the book. I liked the sentiment so much, that I decided to make a good start by having me treating myself like a queen and so indulged myself in a big order from Lush *giggle*

What a terrific read!!! This is a book containing a bit of everything that appeals to me: books, mystery, the occult and a good dash of quirky wittiness.

One of three bookrings received yesterday. I'm not the fastest reader and don't get much time to read and I am not sure in what order I am going to read the three. But I will try not to take too long.

6 June 2006.
Brilliant! And so funny. A great plot with all of the twists and surprises one would expect from a classic mystery or whodunit. Arturo Pérez-Reverte is undoubtedly one of the greatest writers of our generation. Each of his book is a joy.

Enjoyable read. Great Gothic touches and indeed an ending that makes you think. Some parts of it didn't work so well for me - I can't say which as that would spoil it for other people reading this JE - but still a good book overall.

I think I'm the last one in the Ray, but I've PM-ed Mastulela to double check. If so, I might drop it off at the bookcrossing meet tomorrow
