As this book starts out, I had a bit of trouble following the story. It's a flashback alternating between the two main characters. This means that they might obliquely refer to an event from the end of the book without me knowing what they are talking about. Also, the two characters are not really connected to each other at beginning of the book, and so when the narrative switches off between them, I found myself trying hard to change gears to remember the situations each of them are in what they are talking about.
The subject of the novel was really intense. A child bride to a prison convict. It was great to watch this character rise above the whole situation of her life - an uncaring mother, no father, no love and encouragement. She has to set her own standards.
A little too much sex in this book for me. I would have preferred it without.
Overall an interesting read.

received this in the post today - thank you so much, jennannej! it looks like an interesting read, and i hadn't realised it was by the same author as "The Deep End of the Ocean", which I really enjoyed! I'll add it to Mt. TBR and get to it as soon as I can.
ETA: In a futile attempt to reduce my TBR pile, I have made this and several other books AVL for trade/relay/bookbox etc.
