This is required reading for my English class. Looks pretty good...

From back:

Here is Pat Conroy's poerful, captivating and highly acclaimed bestseller. He sweeps us into the turbulent world of four young me - friends, cadets and bloodbrothers - and their days of hazing, heartbreak, pride and betrayal. We go deeply into the heart of the novel's hero, Will McLean, a rebellious outsider with his own personal code of honor, who is battling into manhood the hard way. Immersed in a poignant love affair with a haunting beauty, Will must boldly confront the terrifying injustice of a corrupt institution as he struggles to expose a mysterious group known as "The Ten".

This is not a book I would have selected if I had to pick one but I will admit it was a good read. It captures from the very first chapter and takes you on a ride through the life of a "boy" being turned into a "complete man" in a military school. There was some insigt and language here that was new to me, all related to military life. Never having attended a school of this sort or read anything related to this topic, I'm going to assume that much of what the author wrote about is somewhat realistic (especially considering he graduated from some military school way back in the day). If that's the case, what a scary place.

Other than that, this book has a little bit of everything: a short lived and somewhat tragic romance, a couple of mysteries, some plot twists and plain good adventure. I hear there's also a movie (which I also heard was not very good). I suggest reading the book. It looks scary in size but it does make for a good read.

This will be released at some point early next year. I think I'll have to hold on to it through December for my final in-class essay...
