"I have a New Year's plan," Nelson writes in the prologue to this charming diary of an unapologetic "readaholic." Her goal: to read a book a week for a year and try "to get down on paper what I've been doing for years in my mind: matching up the reading experience with the personal one and watching where they intersect-or don't." Armed with a list of books, the author, a Glamour senior contributing editor, the New York Observer's publishing columnist and a veteran book reviewer, begins her 52-week odyssey.

Sara Nelson decides one sleepless night to journal all the books she read for a year - in fact she adds a further challenge for herself - she will read one book a week.

She then made a list of books she''d been meaning to read but never got to, or finished, for various reasons. She kept the initial list shortish so that she could include the occasional impulse purchase or recommendation.

This is not so much a book of one review after another - it is more about the thought processes behind reading - how moods affect what you read - it IS ok to not finish a book, good books don''t necessarily make good movies, and the location of the read affects your opinion of a book. This is the reason why it is ok to read "Beach Reads" in the summer - light, fluffy and entertaining is more suited to a holiday than an in-depth tome.

It is an easy read - the sort of book you can dip into for a while then put down and do something else. it is a bit like reading a blog - but you get to do it in the comfort of your bed - not sitting in front of a screen - so is more warm and fuzzy :)

I 'caught' this book at Stamp Craft.... another reason to love my favourite shop! ;)

Whilst I found it somewhat dry at times (I generally prefer works of fiction), "So Many Books..." was easy to read and quite enjoyable. I also found the revelation that Nelson says it is OK not to finish a book very liberating - I have always felt guilty! And what she says about reading being a matter of the right book for the right time and place is also very true. After a year of reading, Nelson writes:
"If I knew it at the beginning of the year, I've learned it ten times over: reading is organic and fluid and pretty unpredictable, based as much on mood and location and timing as anything else. If a book is 'good', that doesn't mean you'll want to read it, and if it's 'bad', that doesn't mean you'll pass it by." (p. 224)

I agree wholeheartedly! And Nelson's book has given me a taste for several books she read that sound rather tempting; ones I would have otherwise passed by. I hope the next person who comes across this book doesn't pass it by, but takes it and enjoys it...

I picked it up from Gloria Jeans back in Oct... but with a new baby, I don't get much spare reading time. I will let you know what I think when I get further into it... I thought the title was most appropriate :) I hope to pass it on soon.
