When Gloria met Ron, he was an American pilot. She was working in a munitions factory in Bristol, but still found time to grab what she wanted. Ciggies. Sex. American soldiers. But war has an effect on people. Gloria did things she wouldn't normally do - evil things, some of them - because she might be dead tomorrow. Or someone might.
Fifty years later it's payback time. In her old folfs' home, Gloria is forced to remember the real truth about her and Ron, and confront the secret at the heart of their story.

I found the style of writing very difficult, but persevered because I wanted to find out what the true story was. It was worth it, but I shan't be reading it again.

Picked up off the shelf at Hudsons earlier. I read the ninth life of Louis Drax recently on a ring, by this author so it'll be interesting to see what this will be like.

I wasn't sure what I would make of this, as it looked a bit unusual but I actually rather enjoyed it, not as much as "The ninth Life of Louis Drax" which I read on a ring a few months ago, but I did find it darkly fascinating. It's pretty bawdy in places but not offensively so and its totaly authentic to the time and characters I thought. Liz Jensen's development of present day Gloria's character in an old people's home in her seventies was excellent. The writing style is not my favourite but it makes for an easy undemanding read.

I enjoyed this novel. Thought the characterisation was good and the style authentic, if a bit patronizing, and it kept me turning the pages.

Not read yet - just retrieved it from our bookshelf where my girlfriend placed it after finding it several years ago! So it's found it's way down to London where I will release it after I'm done with it. Sorry it was sat on our shelf for so long!
