Bought as my "J" author for the ABC Challenge.

From the cover:

"Her job is to put a face on the victims of violent crimes. But as forensic sculptor Eve Duncan works on the skull of a newly discovered victim, she's about to get the shock of her life. The murdered Jane Doe's face has been erased beyond recognition. But whoever killed her wasn't trying to hide her identity. The plan is far more horrifying. For as Eve's skilled hands reveal the murdered girl's face, she recognizes someone she knows all too well. Someone who isn't dead. Yet.

To stop this twisted psychopath, Eve must put her own life in the balance. But that's not the worst of it--when her adopted daughter Jane reveals a bizarre connection to the case, Eve can't stop her from joining the hunt for the killer. A hunt that will lead to a terrifying confrontation..."

Ecch...Read this and kept thinking "You're kidding me, right?" So there's this 17-year-old, who is some kind of genius and who is smarter and cooler and more savvy than the two adults looking after her. OK, so in some instances that may be true...I just didn't find any of it believable. Not the kid, not the "dark hero," not the "we'll create a trap that requires international police cooperation but not tell anyone why we're doing it and of COURSE noone will ask," and not the whole dream thing - none of it.

I can read and enjoy stuff that requires suspension of disbelief, but I guess only if it's well done. This wasn't. If all of Johansen's books are like this, she'll be one of my "NEW" ABC Challenge authors who won't get another look.

I say again, "Ecch."

Mailed to littleminx, who played in my 39th Birthday/39th Book RABCK game.

(I was originally planning to mail on the 31st, which is my ACTUAL birthday, but all the books were packed up and ready, and I was going to the post office anyway to mail a bookring book..)

Please note: sent via surface mail, so it could take a while to get there.
