Tree-hugger picked this up for me at the December York Meet Up last night. Apparently she's been lining up an order for reading and I'm first. Thank you, it looks like something I'll appreciate.

Front cover quote: "If George Clooney had walked into the room I would have told him to come back later when I'd finished." Sunday Telegraph

That's not an analogy I'd have used myself, not being a George Clooney fan, but I have every sympathy with the thought behind it.

This is a book to get lost in, ignoring all potential distractions ...

I believe there's a reading order in place - and that Tree-hugger is next on the list. Enjoy!

I've got this now. Best get on with it quickly because a certain Ms Redboots wants it next!

This was a great read. It had everything you could want - thrilling/mysterious plot, likeable characters, uplifting themes of early feminism and civil rights, humour, romance, tears, wisdom... a very compelling 'coming of age' story that I'd recommend to pretty much anyone.

Grabbed this from tree-hugger. Looking forward to reading it - especially as everyone else seems to like it. Think I will take it back to meetup once I've read it.

I was a little bit disappointed with this. That's not to say that there isn't a lot about this book to like - because there is. I felt I never got into the book and I can't explain why. However it did keep me reading and when I got to the last 100 or so pages I felt I needed to sit down and finish it one sitting - which I did, and enjoyed it. The characters are well drawn - especially the 'heroine', but the plot left me a bit cold. If you like American historical stuff then I expect you will like this. Don't let me put you off this book; it is a nice read, a lot of things rolled into one - mystery, romance, historical novel, coming of age etc, etc. Perhaps the fact that there is something for everyone here is what has put me off it. Impossible to be all things to all people!
