"When Kidd's superhacker friend Bobby is murdered and his lapstop is stolen. Kidd knows it's panic time. The secrets stashed in Bobby's computer are enough to hang Kidd and everyone else in Bobby's criminally ingenious cybercircle. It's up to Kidd and his partner, LuEllen, to track it down, find Bobby's killer, and save their own necks - because the secrets are downloading faster than anyone anticipated. And they're far more staggering than anyone imagined."

I stopped into the store for some pretzel snacks at work and this jumped out, begging to be brought home. Mount to be read is frightening but I just had to buy it!

Another loved adventure in the Kidd series. I devoured this in 2 days.

I couldn't help but start to laugh while reading in the waiting room at my Doctor's office... Kidd and John have discovered Bobby's body and needs an investigation to help him track the missing laptop, what to do without calling attention to themselves?

"John had been right. For bringing in an FBI investigation, nothing worked quite as well as a dead black guy and a great big stinking Fiery Cross."

I just loved this book. I'll have to be on the lookout for the other Kidd novels. Thanks so much, My Lady. *smooch*

Kidd thinks the tarot, as a predicive system, is the same sort of superstitious nonsense as astrology, but he finds it useful as a gaming system, a source of little hints to encourage new ways of looking at a problem. And evey time he does a reading on this particular problem, the same card pops up. The Hanged Man.

The fiery cross quote was one of my favorites. There are so many great comments in here, just alongside the story. Like this:
Politicians fuck with people. That's what they do. That's their job. Every day, they get up and wonder who they're gonna fuck with that day. Then they go and do it. They're not of much use--they don't make anything, create anything, think any great thoughts. They just fuck with the rest of us.

There are also some astonishing remarks about what can be done with easily available equipment today, like using a can of beef stew and some stuff from Radio Shack to get free internet access, or encryption that literally cannot be broken without the proper key. A lot to think about.

There's been a lot in the news lately about data mining, and if the reasoning in this book is correct, it's utterly useless in finding terrorists. Even if it's 95% effective, applying that to the entire U.S. population (roughly 300 million) would both miss one in twenty terrorists, and generate about fifteen million false positives. There's no way to check out that many people. The really dangerous ones would be lost in the shuffle. One wonders how correct this line of reasoning is, and why no one has noticed it yet. Then again, even if data mining is useless in catching terrorists, it's very effective for blackmail...

I was not at all surprised to read about a photograph of John Ashcroft standing next to a mirror, and casting no reflection. ;)

The book was quite a ride, hard to put down, full of twists and turns and little bits of hilarity. It truly lives up to the name "Thriller."

I have the perfect release location for this, I hope it finds an appreciative reader.
