I found James Herriot's books already when I was very young. My mother used to watch the TV series based on them when I was a baby. She once told me about this and I begun to read the books. I immediately loved these heartwarming stories of a young vet.
This book is the first in the series of Herriot's books. It tells how he came to work in a small veterinary practice in the Yorkshire countryside in 1930s. Charming characters and both sad and funny stories about animals, all beautifully described.
I bought this particular paperback copy from a Red Cross charity shop in Bournemouth, England, just to read it in English. I have another book containing these stories in Finnish, which is why I give this one to BC. Hopefully someone finds it and likes it as much as I do.

Thanks to Kemppu who brought this to Bookcrossing Meeting in Pub Graali. I have read this and other books by James Herriot several times 20-or-so-years ago but this is the first of them to be read in English.

3.5.2006
I've seen the tv series at least twice (I don't remember how many times it's been shown on tv here) and I've read the books a few times in Finnish. This was my first time reading If Only They Could Talk in English.
What can I say? I like these stories very much. Highly re-readable.
