Funny and moving, with well-drawn characters and situations. I found the internal family clashes particularly moving, and loved the way Samad kept banging on about his great great grandfather...

Arrived in my post box this morning, all wrapped up in red paper with a postcard and a bookmark. Thanks, flajol, for sending this all the way to New Zealand. I can't wait to read it!
This took me longer to read than I expected it too, and it didn't really hold my interest until the midway point where the focus switched to the younger generation. That said, I was hooked from that point till the end.
Zadie Smith's created a vast world here, fill of complex chracters and complex issues - I can only admire her for keeping track of everything as she wrote this book. I loved the way that the themes and the characters lives intertwined, sometimes quite unexpectedly.
Thanks again, flajol for sending this book on to me. I'll find a new home for it soon.

This book apparently has been at my mother's house. She returned it today, after reading it. She said she liked it, although she found it overlong. Mom doesn't mind long books but I think that, similar to Alectoness, she found it took longer to read than she wanted.
