I've never read a Paul Auster I didn't like. His stories are always clever, but never at the expense of entertaining the reader. This one follows a typical Auster-like "Chinese box" format, of a story (or stories) within a story, with a surprise at the end. It's evocation of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and the dwindling away of the lives of those who were once adored figures of the silver screen is marvellous. Inventive and captivating.
